The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a classic adventure in the Nepal Himalayas. The trip to the Annapurna Sanctuary, nestled in the heart of the mountains, will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.

The trekking time depends on the itinerary and acclimatization; it can be from 7 to 14 days. The approximate distance for the round trip is 65 to 70 km. The price to trek to Annapurna Base Camp is very reasonable, especially if you travel with a friend or group.

If you are a solo trekker, the minimum price is USD 765. This price covers the basic trekking services and logistics included. For small groups of 2 to 3 trekkers, the price is USD 700 per person; groups of 4 to 6 pay USD 650 per person. The bigger the group, the lower the rate per person: 7 to 10 trekkers pay USD 625 each, and 11 to 15 trekkers pay USD 600 each.

You will get experienced guides, the permits (ACAP and TIMS) required for trekking, staying in a tea house, and meals during the trek, and all ground transportation, making your Himalayan trip easy and worry-free, no matter how big or small your group is.

Why Annapurna Base Camp Trek Is Worth It?

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is truly a visual Himalayan treat in Nepal. At an altitude of 4,130 meters, the base camp is surrounded by a stunning 360° panorama of peaks that resemble a huge natural amphitheater. If you look left, you would see the extreme face of Annapurna I, while to the right, you would find the holy silhouette of the fishtail, Machapuchare - each step unveiling wild alpine splendor. The ever-changing surroundings, such as terraced fields, bamboo forests, fast-flowing rivers, waterfalls, and glacier moraines, make this trek a combination of several adventures into one great Himalayan experience.

Besides the spectacular landscapes, the cultural diversity of the Annapurna area is an additional aspect that makes the trip so valuable. Locals in the traditional Gurung and Magar villages offer the trekkers a warm welcome, stone-paved narrow streets, prayer wheels, and little monasteries, testifying to the old mountain traditions of several hundred years. The Annapurna Conservation Area, which the trek crosses, is a residence of a variety of plant and animal species, thereby turning your journey into both a cultural and natural experience.

After you arrive at Kathmandu, you will leave the city either by road or air to reach Pokhara, the gateway of the Annapurna region, which lies on the edge of a beautiful lake. You start your hike from Pokhara to the trekking trail through the lovely villages of Ulleri and Ghorepani. One of the highlights of the trip is undoubtedly the stunning view of the rising sun over the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri from Poon Hill, which is reached by a morning walk.

As you make your way to Machapuchare Base Camp and later on to Annapurna Base Camp, you will notice that the scenery has become more alpine and dramatic with every step. Once you have accomplished your mission to reach the base camp and had a small celebration there, you descend via a very scenic trail through Bamboo and Jhinu Danda, where natural hot springs provide comfort for your sore muscles. The entire adventure would be perfectly rounded by a stay in Pokhara followed by a return to Kathmandu.

Although the journey is within reach for physically fit beginners, ABC Trek does have its difficulties. Climbing the lengthy stone stairs, gradually going uphill, and walking for around 5–6 hours every day will require you to be prepared and know when to rest. The most suitable times to take part in the ABC trek are spring (March–May), when rhododendrons are flowering, and autumn (September–November), when the sky is clear and the weather is stable.

If you want a trek that offers you a mix of spectacular Himalaya, an opportunity to experience the local culture, and a deep feeling of achievement, then the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is an excellent option. Let the mountains beckon you, and begin your Himalayan adventure with the first step today.

What You Can Expect from the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

  • During the trek, you will stay in locally run tea houses that offer simple yet comfortable rooms, delicious warm meals, and friendly hospitality.
  • Along the way, you will get a wonderful range of dishes like dal bhat (Nepali main dish), different types of noodles, soups, pancakes, and in some villages even bakery products.
  • The whole way runs through the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, Nepal’s largest conservation area. So you are hiking through a highly protected environment that is full of different plants, forests, and Himalayan animals.
  • Quite a few tea houses on the trail provide you with Wi-Fi, hot showers, and device-charging facilities. In reality, these services can be bought for a very small extra price and make the trek more comfortable than most people think.
  • In the absence of city lights, the night sky in the mountains is amazingly clear. On several days during the trek, you can go out of the lodge and see the sky full of stars with the Himalayas in the backdrop.
  • On your way, you will get in touch with a lot of travelers from different countries, share your stories over cups of tea in tea houses, and build up friendships during the hike.

Is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek Suitable for You?

  • If this is your first time trekking in the Himalayas, the ABC Trek would be an excellent option for you to get started.
  • The path is well-established with tea houses sprinkled all along the way, and the height is not as challenging as it is in several other high-altitude treks like the Annapurna Circuit Trek and the Everest Base Camp Trek.
  • If you are capable of taking 5 to 6 hours of walking daily without trouble and can cope with some of the uphill ascents and stair climbs, this trek will most probably be suitable for you.
  • Annapurna Base Camp Trek can be done over a period of 7-14 days, depending on the route chosen, and hence, it is a very good option for individuals who have limited time for their Himalayan expedition.
  • If you are attracted to the idea of not only trekking through and experiencing the forests, rivers, and mountain scenery but also of getting a glimpse of the local traditions and village life, then this trek provides a perfect mixture.
  • One of the reasons why many people go for this route is that it is very easily adaptable to the needs of a group with vastly different levels of experience, and thus, a shared adventure trip would be a great idea for this one.
  • On top of the fact that one of the most remarkable rewards of this journey is the outstanding landscape, the sense of achievement is also very strong. Therefore, it is also a good fit for those who wish to challenge themselves.

How to Prepare for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

  • Since you will be trekking for 5 to 7 hours daily on mountain trails, it is beneficial to start light training a couple of weeks earlier. Hiking, jogging, cycling, stair climbing, or regular walking are some of the activities that can help you develop your stamina and strengthen your legs.
  • It makes a large difference in the level of your comfort when you bring appropriate clothing like hiking shoes, thermal clothing, a waterproof jacket, a pair of gloves, a sleeping bag, hiking poles, and a small bag for everyday necessities. While packing for the ABC trek, keep in mind that you carry only the most necessary items.
  • As you will be trekking over more than 4,000 meters, it is very beneficial to keep a constant pace during the walk and have enough water to consume.
  • Taking sufficient rest and allowing your body to acclimatize naturally will not only help you get rid of altitude sickness but also make the entire experience a lot more fun.
  • Basically, the only way for trekkers to legally enter the Annapurna Conservation Area Project is by purchasing permits for the ABC trek. These are normally provided by trekking companies, but can also be bought in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
  • You should think about getting travel insurance that specifically includes high-altitude trekking coverage so that you are not at risk if your health deteriorates or if you need to be evacuated in the case of an emergency.
  • A properly planned itinerary for the ABC trek is not only safe, but it also allows your body to get used to the new altitude comfortably and yields a more pleasant trekking experience.
  • Do not hurry the trek through the idea that more time might be taken unnecessarily, because if anything, taking a longer time enhances safety and the overall enjoyment of the trek.

You will continue down the Modi Khola through a narrow gorge from the Himalaya. Before Hinku Cave, you will have to climb steeply through a drier forest. To get to Deurali, the most scenic part of the day, the trail goes down and then up again. Since there is less vegetation, you can even see the valley, the river below, and the vertical granite cliffs above with bands of thin waterfalls. Deurali is an excellent place to stay for the night.

To get to Annapurna Base Camp, you must keep going northwest.

The trail to ABC is wider, has less vegetation, and is prone to avalanches; so extra care should be taken to avoid any possible risks. Hiunchuli, from Annapurna South to Annapurna I, Khangsar Kang, Gangapurna, Annapurna III, and Machhapuchhare can all be seen from ABC. The sheer beauty of the surrounding snow-capped mountains will make this day one that you will always remember. You will sleep at Base Camp.

After days of trekking, you can relax in the warm water and soothe your tired muscles. Useful Info

Best Time to Do the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

If you desire the optimal mix of stunning mountain views, pleasant temperatures, and reliable weather, then the most suitable trekking seasons to Annapurna Base Camp are spring and autumn.

    • Spring (March to May) – Best For Flowers And Clear Mountain Views

Spring is one of the most popular seasons for trekking in the Annapurna region. During this time, the forests come alive with blooming rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower. The weather is generally stable, temperatures are comfortable, and the views of peaks like Annapurna I and Machapuchare are often crystal clear.

    • Autumn (September to November) – Best Overall Trekking Season

Autumn is generally agreed upon as the best period to do the ABC trek. Once the monsoon rains have purged the atmosphere, the skies become unbelievably clear, which results in breathtaking views of the Himalayas. The temperature is quite comfortable, the paths are well-maintained, and the weather is very dependable for trekking.

    • Winter (December to February) – Quiet Trails And Snowy Scenery

Winter trekking is suitable for those who like deserted trails and white landscapes. But the temperatures can be extremely low at higher altitudes near base camp. With the right equipment and planning, winter can provide a different and less busy trekking experience.

    • Monsoon (June to August) – Lush Landscapes, but Frequent Rain

The monsoon season is characterized by intense rainfall and a drop in temperature. Due to frequent rains, trails are sometimes only passable with difficulty. Besides that, the visibility of mountains is usually hampered by clouds. Nevertheless, for those who don't mind being soaked from time to time, the woods and valleys become very beautiful as the green color reigns supreme.

    Annapurna Base Camp Trek Difficulty

    • During the hike, you will be walking for about 5 to 7 hours a day on average, depending on the itinerary and your pace. Some parts of the trails are forested paths, others are stone steps, and the rest are the uphill sections.
    • The highest point you will reach on this trek is the Annapurna Base Camp at an altitude of 4,130 meters. Being at this height can be difficult for some hikers; however, ascending gradually will allow your body to acclimatize.
    • The stone steps, thousands of them, especially the parts that go down in the valley, are one of the hardest things on the trek. The steps will tire the leg and knee muscles.
    • The temperature at the highest points can be extremely cold, especially in the morning when the sun has yet to appear and during the evening when it is fading.
    • Besides fatigue and the occasional discomfort, you will be most challenged mentally by mountain trekking. However, a positive mindset and the necessary patience are the best companions for long multi-day mountain treks.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Travel Insurance

Purchasing travel insurance for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is important as it is located at a high altitude of 4,130 meters. While the trek is generally safe, there is a chance of altitude sickness and other unforeseen situations, such as landslides, injuries, or sudden weather changes in the mountains.

On the 14-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Green Valley Nepal Treks & Research Hub, all trekkers are required to produce a copy of their valid travel insurance certificate prior to proceeding with the trip.

Your insurance policy should include coverage for medical treatment, emergency repatriation, and high-altitude helicopter rescue and evacuation if the need arises.

While in the remote parts of the Himalayas, helicopter evacuation is generally the most expedient means of getting a trekker to a hospital in Pokhara or Kathmandu in case of emergencies. Therefore, it is vital that your insurance explicitly states that it covers high-altitude trekking (above 4,000 meters) and helicopter rescue costs.

If incase a crisis occurs during the trek, we will use the information on your insurance for organizing a swift and safe rescue operation. Properly having travel insurance helps you to be at ease during the trek while also allowing you to marvel at the beautiful Annapurna region.

Accommodation during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

During this hike, you will be staying at comfortable tea houses that are operated by local families. The lodging is basic but adequate for hikers. Most of the accommodations are prepared on a twin-sharing basis and generally include wooden beds, mattresses, pillows, blankets, and simple furniture. In most villages, the tea houses provide attached or shared bathrooms, although private bathrooms may not be available everywhere, especially at higher altitudes.

On your 14-day trekking adventure with Green Valley Nepal Treks, the team promises that you will be accommodated in the finest tea houses on the ABC trek. These tea houses also have a cozy dining area where trekkers come together to enjoy their meals, unwind, and share their experiences after a day of hiking.

It is possible to request single rooms, and these are usually available in the villages at lower altitudes as well as in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. On the other hand, as you ascend towards the mountains, the availability of accommodation decreases. In areas like Deurali and near Annapurna Base Camp, rooms are typically shared because the lodges have very limited capacity.
