Three High Passes Trek by Road Overview

The Three High Passes Trek goes by many names: the Three Passes Trek, the Everest Triple Pass Trek, the Everest Three Passes Circuit, the EBC Three Passes Trek, and so on. However you refer to it, the essence of the trek remains the same.  It is the toughest, most challenging, and most diverse trek in the whole of Khumbu region that passes over three major difficult passes: Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m).

Many trekkers use airfare to start with a trekking experience in the Everest region. However, by booking the Three High Passes Trek by Road trekking package you can skip the life-threatening flight of Lukla. If you are setting out on this journey, it will begin by road, which will provide you with the next level of excitement.

Covering three mountain passes in a single trek sounds good. Isn't it? Many trekkers find the journey quite fascinating since the trekking mainly follows the roadway views from Kathmandu to Thamdanda. 19-day Three High Passes Trek by road is an opportunity to see the Himalayan world from the top of the Everest region.

This journey will discover the ultimate views of the entire Himalayas ranges through realistic and epic landscapes. When on the trip, the Gokyo Lake, Kalapathar (5545m), Gokyo Ri (5357m), and Chukkung Ri (5550m) will come into view. Sagarmatha, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, and Pumori will welcome you from different points throughout this journey. This road-based trekking package is ideal for those seeking challenges throughout the trail to explore the Khumbu region on foot or in a private vehicle.

However, the road trip passes through deserted green valleys, dwarf prostrate trees, shabby hamlets of the persisting village of tin and timber, multi-colored prayer flags, and spinning wheels of the ubiquitous, most famous Buddhist monastery at Tengboche and enjoy the mind-blowing cultural hospitality of Sherpas in Marulung.

It is a passionate journey through the majestic land of the great Himalayas, the large turbulent Dudh Koshi of Khumbu, Khunde, Khumjung, Pangboche, Lobuche, and Base Camp of Mount Everest, dark forests, meadows, plus villages with steep hilltop views. The trek explores the less-beaten trail in untouched Gokyo Valley. This unique journey provides an all-round fabulous experience.

The Everest High Passes by road covers a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sagarmatha National Park, with rare species. Here, you will enjoy watching pleasing animals such as Musk Deer, blue sheep, Himalayan Tahrs, Red Pandas, blood Pheasant, Tibetan snow cock, red horned Pheasant, yak, and other vivid species.

At Green Valley Nepal Treks, Three High Passes by road for 19 days promises an incredible wilderness adventure with an efficient itinerary and comfortable teahouses or lodges for accommodation. Is Three High Passes Trek by Road Suitable For You?

  • The 19-day Three High Passes Trek by road is ideal if you enjoy tackling challenges; you will touch three difficult passes, Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La, and breathtaking views and exciting walking conditions are guaranteed.
  • If high peak and cultural exploration is your passion, Three High Passes Trek by Road will take your passion to the next level. • The Three High Passes Trekking is hard by road and requires reasonable mental and physical preparation. Trekking will be for at least 6 to 7 hours daily on up-and-down steep trails. If you would like to have a pleasant time while trekking, physical exercises help boost your endurance level.
  • You are a first-timer but don’t want to skip the Three High Passes Trek by Road during these holidays. This entertaining trip is impossible to leave if you train for several days, have the proper clothes and devices, and meet a friendly, experienced guide.

How do You Prepare for the Three High Passes Trek by Road?

Many hikers and trekkers fly into Lukla and then trek to Namche. Trekking to Three Passes will be fun, but trek preparation is even more paramount. If you wish to do something different or have a limited budget, this is the ultimate guide to preparing for the Three High Passes Trek via road transport from Kathmandu.

  • Physical Endurance: Crossing Three High Passes by road through heavy terrains in the Everest area is not a joke. We recommend cardio exercises, outdoor games, running, cycling, cardio exercise in the gym, and enough water with nutrients. Additionally, hike to the shortest places near you to create a base for a long trek.
  • Mental preparation: Mental preparation is as necessary as a few days of backpack tour to the Three High Passes begin in Kathmandu. However, participating in 19-day continued hikes above 5000 meters altitudes, expect unpredictable weather conditions and altitude sickness. Such problems call for an excellent mindset.
  • Gear, Clothing, and Equipment: Physical and mental preparation is insufficient for a Three High Passes Trek by Road. It is equally important as physical and psychological preparation. Hiking in good boots, warm and dry clothes, a rain suit, a proper backpack, a sleeping bag, a foam pad, a good and reliable headlamp, a water filter, a first aid kit, etc. is never a bad idea.

The jeep ride from Ghurmi offers rivers, agricultural traces, lush fields, and villages, which gives another level of satisfaction that airfare can't. About a 7- to 8-hour Jeep ride from Ghurmi puts your step in Thamdanda through Salleri.

Celebrate your first accomplishment in the teahouse, thinking more about the exciting and incredible adventure of the upcoming day.

The road passes through Chheplung and Surke via a rhododendron grove with occasional steep sections and river crossings with suspension bridges. A 2-hour trek from Surke brings you to Lukla, where you will find hundreds of trekkers heading toward Everest Base Camp.

Similarly, the 2-hour concrete step will be constructed up into the foothills in Phakding through Nurning and Ghat, where you will enjoy the evening in a teahouse.

You will enter Jorshale after checking permits for the Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo. The two hours of climbing to Namche Bazaar at a certain point are relatively steep and tiring, but it is worth it. This town is on a mountain slope on an amphitheater structure, filled with trekkers, stores, and bakeries.

Some shots of the Thamserku and brief shots of the great peaks of Everest make it more attractive. The rest of the day can be spent discovering the exquisite Sherpa country and, for instance, seeing the sunset at the National Park View Point. You will spend the night in the naturally endowed Namche bazaar at a cozy tea house.

Spend time gaining a first impression of Namche, where several government offices, an internet cafe, ATMs, restaurants, shops, and other services are found in a lively market. It is the great hub of the Khumbu region.

The best place to go for an acclimatization hike is the Everest View Hotel. During your tour, you will attend the Sherpa Culture Museum and take in the beauty of the Syangboche Airstrip with a view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam.

However, you will get to another tourist attraction, Khumjung village, where Khumjung Monastery is located, not to mention the sacred ‘Yeti scalp.

Additionally, you will enter the Sagarmatha National Park Tourist Visitor Center, where you will see the rare pieces of flora and fauna and learn more about First Everest Cimbers and Sherpa hospitality.

Once you leave Namche, you will see a superb glimpse of Everest, Thamserku, and Ama Dablam in a few hours of walking toward Tengboche. The path descends to Phunki Tenga, where you will follow the Imja Khola before beginning a steep ascent through dense forest to Tengboche.

As the trail rises through the forest, the best of Himalaya Thar and Himalaya Monals can be seen here. The famous Tengboche Monastery produces some of the finest pictures of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and the Ama Dablam.

In Tengboche, you will rest in a peaceful community and gaze up at the surrounding peaks through a window view.

The route from Tengboche to Dingboche takes a few hours of trekking through the forests before a bridge over the Imja Khola to enter cliff-bound Pangboche village, where you will see endangered species, Musk Deer and Daphne.

Somare is another picturesque community that takes 3 hours of walking along trees to get small shrubs planted. Along the way, you will pass through some ancient mani walls and stupas, and after 2-3 hours of walking, you step on Dingboche.

The trek to Dingboche is done with a fabulous view of Ama Dablam and Tabuche peaks. A good night's rest in teahouses in Dingboche is always a good idea.

  • Teahouse or lodge

Three High Passes Trek by Road will continue from Dingboche to Chhukung with a short hike of 3-4 hours. Following the Imja Khola Valley to glacial moraines, you will reach the Yak Bibre.

A half-hour hike from Bibre takes you to Chhukung, where you will see incredible snow-covered Chhukung Ri, Ama Dablam, and Amphu Gyabjen. At Chhukung, you will have a sweet dream in a convenient teahouse, enjoying the glacier and surrounding peaks.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 3 to 4 Hours

Today is the day to be lazy and let your body adjust to the new elevation. The best warm-up with stunning views of Makalu, Baruntse, and Island Peak can be obtained by making a short foray right to Chhukung Ri at 5,550 meters.

The vistas are outstanding, and gaining some altitude is always beneficial before the following part of the trek.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Chhukung to Lobuche hiking through Kongma La Pass, the highest pass of the Three High Passes trek, is the longest hiking day described in the Three High Passes Trek by Road. It would take anything between 8 and 9 hours to accomplish this day’s last activity.

The descent to Bibre is delicate, with exposed large rocks and a long walk across the enormous Khumbu glacier. From Kongma La Pass, the environment becomes slightly more demanding because of the high elevation.

Standing at the top of the pass (5,540 m) offers mighty Mt. Makalu, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse. River crossing of the glacial streams and then trek through the crumpled icy moraine field leads to Lobuche. It gives a deserved stop with a fantastic view of the sunset on the top of Lobuche Peak.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 8 to 9 Hours
  • 7.7 Kilometers

After the highest pass, Kongma La, you will push from Lobuche across Khumbu Glacier to Gorakshep, your next stop. The day is relatively short, as it takes 3 to 4 hours to walk through the pyramid landmark, where you will appreciate the outstanding peaks, such as Pumori, Mahalangur, Lingtern, Khumbutse, and Nuptse.

After a few hours of ascending from Thangma Riju, you will reveal Changri Glacier, Gorakshep Tsho, and 360-degree snow-capped Changri, Nuptse, and Lobuche are beyond the imagination.

Passing through memorials commemorating Indian Army mountaineers makes you realize the trail to Khumbu icefall is hazardous until you reach Everest Base Camp, where you see vividly colored tents with large hikers.

Everest Base Camp is the pinnacle of today's hike. After that, you will descend to Gorakshep for a tight sleep.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 3 to 4 Hours
  • 5.2 Kilometers

Kala Patthar is great for an early morning trek if you fancy a bit of a panorama of the first light on Mount Everest.

A few hours of trekking to Kalapatthar will be remarkable, where you will have an excellent 360-degree view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumo Ri, Ama Dablam, Khangtegra, Lobuche Peak, base camp, Khumbu Glacier, Kalapatthar, and icefall in a single bowl.

In exchange, create some moments and take pictures with the snowy top for a lifetime photo as a souvenir. After a good view, return to Gorak Shep and trek to Dzongla, the village at the base of Cho La Pass, retracing Lobuche.

The upcoming path to Dzongla is comparatively smooth, although hard to maintain attention, where you will rest before crossing Cho La Pass.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 7 to 8 Hours
  • 11.5 Kilometers

Trekking from Dzongla to Thagnak via Cho La is the most challenging route of the Three High Passes Trek by Road. You will start your day early, crossing the spur woodland from Dzongla and hugging amazing Cholatse, Lobuche East and West, and Chola Lake.

The climb is strenuous, especially in distinct, sensitive stages, crossing glaciated terrain and steep icy trails. You will see great peaks enclosed by flying prayer flags from the top of the Cho La Pass.

If the rocks are not frozen with ice, the path towards Thagnak is comparatively easy to descant from Cho La Pass. You will make your evening delightful in Thagnak.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 7 to 8 Hours
  • 8 Kilometers

After leaving the small village, Dzongla, you will have a short but scenic trek from Thagnak to Gokyo. You will follow the trail to the edge of the very dramatic Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal.

The open path becomes visible as you draw near Gokyo, and a stunning series of turquoise lakes opens up, with the third lake (Dudhpokhari) sitting right next to the village. Gokyo is a magic spot, providing an extensive view of peaks around and pristine glacial lakes.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 2 to 3 Hours
  • 2.7 Kilometers

Adding a second acclimatization day in Three High Passes Trek by Road is the key to achieving Gokyo Ri. A few hours of walking from Gokyo offers six lakes, and the fourth lake has a towering cliff at the north.

The ascent to Gokyo Ri from Gorak is steep, and the glimpses of the incredible Himalayan chain at Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho-Oyu, Gyachung, and the great Ngozumpa Glacier are surprising.

You will get Cho Oyu Base Camp in front of you after continuous walking through the largest azure blue dazzling lake. It is entirely on your curiosity, time, and energy to know whether you can push it to the sixth lake. Afterward, you will have a restful night after descending in Gokyo.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

The Three High Passes Trek by Road starts early with a 7.4 km hike from Gokyo to Marulung via Cho La Pass. You will walk about 6 to 7 hours for Renjo La Pass, following the Renjo La trail through Dudh Pokhari.

The trekking from Gokyo to Renjo La pass is annoying, with steep ups and downs, but the glimpses of Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Tsho, and the high view of Mount Everest are eye-popping.

In addition, the provocative Cholatse, Lobuche, Cho Oyu, and Taboche on the descent to Angladumba Tsho are wow.

After a few hours of walking through Lumde with massive stones, introduce the charming Sherpa village, Marulung, where you will reveal Relama Tsho and Renjo Lake. You will have a sweet dream in a teahouse at Marulung.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours
  • 7.4 Kilometers

A few hours of descending to Tarnga from Marulung through a rhododendron forest over the gushing Bhote Koshi River takes you toward Namche Bazaar. After passing through Langmuche Khola and Gompa, a famous Buddhist shrine, bring the remarkable Sundar Peak near you.

On your route, you will visit Thame, one of the oldest monasteries in the Khumbu area and a religious village. Retracing the way of Samde, Thamo, and Phurte takes you to the world's highest power plant, enjoying the view of Khari Goma and Laudo Monastery.

After enjoying the outstanding view of the monastery, you will descend toward Namche, a fascinating and lively town market, through the pine forest, gompas, prayer flags, chortens, and mani stones. The feeling of achievement in a colorful city will spend your evening.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 7 to 8 Hours
  • 11.5 Kilometers

The journey from Namche Bazaar to Chaurikharka, your destination for the day, takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. This trek is quite lengthy, with most of the path descending alongside the Dudhkoshi River, passing through a tropical forest and Sherpa villages.

Along the way back to Chaurikharka, you will revisit the same landscapes and mountain scenery, but from a fresh perspective as you approach from the opposite direction.

To reach Chaurikharka, you'll traverse picturesque villages like Larja Dobjan, Monjo, Bengkar, Ghat, and Chheplung once again. After arriving at a teahouse in Chaurikharka, you may choose to visit Lukla, which is just a 20-minute trip away, known for having one of the world’s most challenging airports.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 hours
  • 18 kilometers

Today marks the final day of hiking on the Three High Passes Trek by Road schedule. After enjoying breakfast in Chaurikharka, you will begin a short trek to Surke, which takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. From there, the trail ascends through the forest to Paiya (Chutok).

Following this, the path descends to Thamdanda over the next hour before leveling out as you approach Khari La. Once you arrive at the teahouse in Thamdanda, our guide will confirm the jeep arrangements for your journey back to Kathmandu the following day.

Kathmandu to Salleri by Taking the Jeep Route was an Adventure

I had never been to Nepal before and decided to push myself on the Three High Passes Trek. I had no expectations and didn’t even know what it would be like to go through this. But it was beyond anything I’d imagined. I had no words to describe it. Going from Kathmandu to Salleri by taking the Jeep route was an adventure in and of itself, with little or narrow roads and amazing views of valleys and terraced fields. The experiences on the trails brought us several terrific shocks. Kongma La Pass was incredibly brutal, but standing between giants like Lhotse and Ama Dablam made it catchy. Every bit of this trek was organized professionally by Green Valley Nepal Trek, and our guide, Raju, was just wow.

Three High Passes Trek by Road is Way More Epic

When I booked the Package, I was afraid to think of a road trek, but the Three High Passes Trek by road is way more epic than a thrilling flight to Lukla!!! Going to Salleri on a Jeep ride was quite enthralling, with stylish valley views. The High Passes were very tough but striking at the same time: the landscapes were stunning. I still have to remind myself of the morning when the day breaks over the Kalapatthar–the Everest looks like a golden lamp. I never expected to see prayer flags freely hanging over Renjo La Pass and feel so calm and at ease. I have never thought of a memorable moment in my life. All credit goes to Green Valley Nepal Trek and the Team. I am grateful for their help throughout the whole journey.

FAQs
  • A 19-day Three High Passes Trek by road starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Thamdanda. You will pass through three difficult passes: Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La. However, you will familiarize yourself enough at Namche Bazaar, Chhukung, and Gokyo, covering a certain distance and feeling peaks.

  • You can get good maps for Three High Passes Trek from professional trekking agencies like Green Valley Nepal Trek or any outdoor in Kathmandu. In addition, you can also access online maps, but carrying a physical map is an excellent option in high-altitude areas.

  • At the Everest Three Passes trek by road, you will see Mt. Everest and other giant peaks from Gokyo RI and Kalapatthar with genuine Sherpa culture at Namche Bazar and Murulung Vally. Crossing Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La over Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp are also included.

  • The road itinerary of the 19-day Three High Passes Trek costs between USD 1700 and USD 2500, including accommodation, transport, and meal service from Kathmandu.

  • Yes, you can do the Three High Passes Trek solo, but we strongly recommend you do it with a group because the terrain is beyond thought, which can result in mountain sickness. If you are doing a solo trek, you must be careful and ready with a map compass and emergency plans.

  • Of course, if you want to add extra days to your adventure, you can start on Jiri, as many trekkers select a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. This enables you to take some other paths before joining the main trail into town, which adds magical details to landscapes that might otherwise lack all the tourist visitations.

  • The Everest Three Passes Trek ranks hard with the best scenery crossing three high passes (Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La). You will have a real slice of the Everest region's diverse landscape while evading some of the more heavily tramped routes leading straight to Everest Base Camp.

  • Three High Passes Trek Nepal is about 166 kilometers and spans 18 days with an excellent itinerary. This challenging trek takes you through superb landscapes in the Everest region, including three major high passes: Cho La Pass (5,420m), Kongma La Pass (5,535m), and Renjo La Pass (5,360m).
