Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

Manaslu Circuit Trek is categorized as one of the adventure treks in Nepal and combines the high of the Himalayas and its natural beauty with rich cultural heritage and biological diversity. Manaslu, located east of the Annapurna range is the eighth-highest peak in the world and was open to foreigners since 1992.

Manaslu Circuit Trek is a laborious trek that demands experience along with good physical well-being. The Manaslu Circuit trek ascends through Budi Gandaki River offering numerous rivers and waterfalls to Larkya La Pass (5213 m), the highest point in the Manaslu Circuit Trek, providing striking views of Himalchuli, Manaslu (8156 m), Ganesh Himal and other various mountains. En route, diverse landscapes, and variety in flora and fauna amaze anyone. The laborious part of trekking along the Manaslu circuit starts from Samagoan (3450 m) where you could get lucky to see the freezing green lake of Birendra. However, the biggest challenge awaits - crossing the snow-clad Larkye La pass (5213m), which is 8 km from the Tibet border, and offers classic views of Himlung Himal (7,126 m), Cheo Himal, Gyaji Kang, Kang Guru (6,981m) and Annapurna II (7,937m). From Larkya La (Larkya Pass), we take a steep descent along a snow-covered trail down to Tanbuche. Then we follow a narrow trail to the Dudh Khola (Milk River) banks passing through magnificent forests of rhododendron, Pine, and Juniper. A further descent transforms the alpine vegetation to subtropical greenness. Then the walk through the Marshyangdi River to Besishahar marks the end of the Trek.

14 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek is getting more and more popular as a new trekking destination but it still sees fewer trekkers compared to the established trekking routes in the Annapurna region. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a stunning trek with spectacular views of Mount Manaslu (8163 m) and the Ganesh Himal Range, among others. Along the trail to Manaslu Trek, you will cross an interesting mix of authentic Hindu and Tibetan-style Buddhist villages. The trail follows the spectacular Budhi Gandaki River all the way from Arughat to its source just below the Larkya Pass (5125 m). As you start low, at around 700 m, the landscapes are incredibly varied ranging from the green countryside and lush forests to spectacular high-altitude landscapes skirting huge glaciers.

Crossing Larke Pass (5125 m) can be tough when there is snow. However, the stunning landscape with the mighty Himalayas towering straight above you and the spectacular glaciers make it more than worth the effort. The Larke Pass pass links the Budhi Gandaki with the Marsyangdi valley. The descent passes through beautiful alpine meadows at Bhimtang before joining the main Annapurna Circuit route heading to the trailhead at Besisahar. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is easily accessible from Kathmandu. It originally started in the town of Arughat or Sotikhola or Machhi Khola; however, with roads being built many trekkers start at either Barpak or Machhi Khola a bit further up the trail.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek described here starts in Soti Khola and ends in Dharapani. It’s also possible to finish the walk in Besisahar which is also the starting point for the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The itinerary below is one of the many possibilities. The trek can be made longer or shorter depending on the length of your walking days and starting point. There are basic guesthouses all along the trail so you can choose if you want to camp or stay at the teahouses. You can combine the Manaslu Circuit Trek with the Tsum Valley, a beautiful, secluded valley where century-old Tibetan traditions prevail.

We at Green Valley Nepal Treks and Research Hub have a 14 days Itinerary for the Manaslu Circuit trek and the itinerary includes your arrival and departure days to and from Nepal. Preparation for Manaslu Circuit Trekking

The Manaslu Circuit trek is a challenging and remote trek in the Manaslu Region of Nepal. It passes through beautiful mountain landscapes and traditional Gurung villages and offers a chance to see the eighth-highest mountain in the world, Manaslu (8,163 meters). However, it also requires a high level of physical fitness and preparation. Here are some things to consider as you prepare for your trek:

  • Physical fitness: The Manaslu Circuit trekis considered a strenuous trek and requires a high level of physical fitness. You should be able to hike for several hours each day, carry a light daypack, and be able to handle steep and rocky terrain. You can start preparing for the trek by doing regular cardio exercises, such as running or cycling, as well as strength training exercises to build up your leg muscles. It's also a good idea to practice hiking with a loaded backpack.
  • Altitude acclimatization: The Manaslu Circuit trek takes you to high altitudes, with the highest point being the Larkya La pass at an altitude of 5,106 meters. Altitude sickness can be a serious issue, so it's important to give yourself enough time to acclimatize.
  • Travel documents: You will need a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card and a permit to enter the Manaslu Conservation Area.
  • Travel insurance: It is mandatory to have travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation by helicopter. Please check your policy and coverage properly before you leave.
  • Gear and Equipment: You will need appropriate clothing and gear for the trek, including warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and pants, a good pair of hiking boots, trekking poles, a warm sleeping bag, etc. Be sure to bring enough sunscreen and lip balm, as well as good-quality sunglasses.
  • Mental preparation: The Manaslu Circuit trek is challenging, both physically and mentally. The trek requires a certain level of flexibility, patience, and positivity. It's good to mentally prepare yourself for long days of trekking, changing weather conditions, and unexpected situations.

It's a great idea to consult a doctor before the trek since it would be a remote area and the availability of doctors would be scarce or not available at all. It's a great idea to have a medical kit, including basic medicines and a few prescribed medicines.

Useful Info

Best Season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek:

  • Spring, which includes March, April, and May, is the ideal time to hike the Manaslu Circuit. In these three months, the weather has improved greatly, making hiking possible and providing breathtaking vistas of Mt. Manaslu and other glaciers. Many hikers walk during this season since the high mountains' temperate is neither chilly nor hot. Rhododendron blossoms in a variety of hues may be seen from the path.
  • Autumn, which encompasses September, October, and November, is another ideal time to hike the Manaslu Circuit. Climbers can enjoy the bright skies and breathtaking mountain vistas during this time of year. Trekkers may enjoy the magnificent panoramas, including high snowcaps, during this season because the daytime atmosphere is fairly steady and consistent.

Trekking is not advised during the winter and rainy seasons. The road to cross Larkya La Pass is challenging during the winter because of the severe cold and the fact that all lodges are closed in Dharamsala. Similar to this, there is a strong possibility of landside during the rainy season, which is quite dangerous.

Food during the Manaslu Circuit Trek:

While visiting Manaslu Circuit, you will have access to a sufficient supply of delicious, hygienic, and healthy cuisine, but won't have as many options as you would in major towns. In the trek regions, you will have 11 dinners, 12 lunches, and 12 breakfasts. It is highly recommended to eat fresh vegetables and drink enough water to be hydrated and healthy. However, combining non-vegetarian foods with dairy, coffee, and alcohol is not advised.

Breakfast options include cereals such as oatmeal and cornflakes, toast with jam, butter, cheese, and honey, Tibetan bread, eggs, pancakes, and muesli bread, as well as fruits, vegetables, and hot beverages.

You might eat meals at lunch and dinner that will satisfy all of your body's needs for hiking, including Dhal, Bhat, Tarkari, vegetable curry, potatoes, vegetables, Tibetan bread, various soups, sandwiches, spaghetti noodles, thukpa, pasta, snacks (papad, prawn), desserts, etc.

Accommodation during the Manaslu Circuit Trek:

Depending on your preferences and price range, Kathmandu offers the greatest hotels and lodging options. However, while hiking in the Manaslu region, you will spend the night at a tea house, where each room has two beds. You will mostly utilize common restrooms, which may be located outside of the room. For your Manaslu Circuit Journey, we will make every effort to arrange the friendliest tea house possible. There is a common area where people gather for meals and relaxation, and it's a great place to be warm by the fire in the evening. If you will be in high-altitude places, you should pack sleeping bags.

Difficulty of the Manaslu Circuit Trek:

In terms of difficulty, Manaslu Circuit Trek is fairly challenging. The path travels via scenic Larkya Pass which is 5106 meters above sea level. The Manaslu hiking trails are also tough and need tremendous work both physically and emotionally to overcome the stress and weariness. When compared to Annapurna and Everest, the Manaslu Circuit trip is hard in difficulty level due to the absence of appropriate paved or created trails and guided routes. Having previous trekking experience or hiking habits for this hike might be advantageous. Prior physical preparation will support the mountaineer a lot to comfortably accomplish the Manaslu Circuit Trek as it is one of the tough treks in Nepal.

Travel Insurance for Manaslu Circuit Trek:

Without adequate travel insurance, a relaxing journey is impossible. The expense of emergency care and evacuation in the case of illness or injury is rather alarming. As a result, we heartily advise purchasing travel insurance for everyone who books Manaslu Circuit Trek with Green Valley Nepal Trek. We advise you to exercise caution when selecting coverage because some insurers have unique exclusions for adventurous travel. Make sure your insurer is aware of the Green Valley Nepal schedule you intend to follow and is willing to cover all of the activities being engaged in during the trip before purchasing insurance. You must have emergency helicopter rescue and medical expenses coverage with your insurance if you want to go hiking or mountain climbing in the Himalayas. Considering that all payments for deposits are non-refundable, double-check your insurance coverage to ensure that it covers trip cancellation.

Altitude Sickness on Manaslu Circuit Trek:

After reaching an altitude of 3500m, symptoms of altitude sickness such as nausea, breathlessness, headaches, and an unwillingness to move start to occur. You might be having a terrible headache, trouble falling asleep, and feeling woozy. You could also have tightness in your chest, lose coordination, and have problems walking. Your symptoms may become more acute as you ascend in elevation. Green Valley Nepal's Trek guides have extensive training in such protocols and are skilled in providing emergency care. Here are some remedies for altitude sickness during Manaslu Circuit Trek:

  • Descend: If you start to experience symptoms of altitude sickness, the most effective remedy is to descend to a lower altitude as soon as possible. This will help your body get more oxygen, and the symptoms should improve quickly.
  • Take it easy: Avoid overexertion, especially when you first arrive at a high altitude. It's best to take it easy for the first day or two, to allow your body to adjust. You can start with short and easy hikes to get your body acclimated to the altitude.
  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, which can dehydrate you. Dehydration can make the symptoms of altitude sickness worse.
  • Use a supplement: Acetazolamide (Diamox) is a medication that can help prevent or reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness. It can be taken before you ascend to a high altitude. But it's better to consult with a doctor before taking this medication.
  • Oxygen: If you have severe symptoms of altitude sickness, such as difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or confusion, using a portable oxygen canister may help.
  • Rest: Take time to rest, especially if you have mild symptoms of altitude sickness. Symptoms may improve with rest and wait for a day or two before continuing to ascend.
  • Do not ignore symptoms: Symptoms of altitude sickness can worsen quickly, and if left untreated, can lead to more serious conditions such as High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE).

another great trip with Green Valley

I trekked with Green Valley some years ago, and they were my first choice to come back to for my most recent trek (October 2023). It was (again) an excellent trip- the whole team, from Raj, the organiser, and then the guide Mahesh, and porter Sunil were all brilliant: Mahesh in particular was king of the hills in looking after our group, and in showing us the splendid mountains, and helping to meet the people of the high valley. And Sunil- amazing footwork on rough ground and wet rocks- he should be an acrobat. Another 10/10 experience, and I'll definitely choose Green valley when I return to Nepal next time!

    Not only guides, but friends

The best experience of 2023? Trip around Manaslu. Not only for the beautiful landscape, the fulfilled dream of seeing the 8000 m summit, but especially for the great people I met. Our two groups from Green Valley joined on the very first day. The fact that our guides took care of us 100% applies to almost all agencies, but ours took care of us not only as clients, but also as friends, and we are still in contact with them today. Krishna surprised us 2 days after the end of the "contract" with a waiting taxi at the bus station in Kathmandu, helped us find our hotel which we had booked, showed us the peculiarities of the city until the last moment, when he had to go with another group to the mountains. I could write many more compliments, but it will be best if you try it yourself with this company. And our guides, Krishna Prasad Lamichhane and Narendra Dhital, thank you again!!!

The journey may be completed in 10 or 12 days, but doing so would mean rushing through it and possibly missing out on some of the experience. Not to mention that it will be tougher and more physically exhausting. If you have the time, think about taking an excursion to the magnificent, freshly inaugurated Tsum Valley.

  • In addition to the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), you also need the Manaslu Special Permit and the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP). For your peace of mind, Green Valley Nepal Trek will assist you with all the essential documentation.

  • There isn't an age restriction for the Manaslu Trek, but you do need to be in decent physical form and have an optimistic perspective. We also advise you to contact your doctor before the vacation in order to get the appropriate approval, guidance, and prescriptions for traveling at extremely high altitudes.

  • To carry 20 kg of baggage for two hikers, Green Valley Nepal will employ one porter (a maximum of 10 kg for each trekker). Don't overwhelm your porters, since they not only carry your gear but also help you achieve new heights in spirit. In addition, their efforts to carry you to your goal may be motivated by your love, devotion, and generosity. So please be mindful of this.

  • In Nepal, leaving tips for porters and trek guides is encouraged as an expression of gratitude. Your trek guide and porter are excellent supporters who helped you experience something that just a select few people can. In addition to guiding you, carrying your supplies, and being aware of your safety, they want you to achieve joyfully more than anybody, much like family. Your tips so express you are thankful to them.

  • Not all locations on the Manaslu Circuit trip offer ATM services. Therefore, be sure to have adequate cash with you.

  • It is mandatory to get travel insurance, which must include medical and emergency repatriation coverage, as well as costs for helicopter rescue and evacuation at the highest elevations.

  • After making the advance deposit, please email the following papers to us.

    • A copy of your passport
    • Passport size photos
    • Flight details
    • Copy of travel insurance
  • Although plastic bottles are not allowed in the Manaslu region, bottled water is widely available there at a reasonable price. As a result, you must have a water bottle that you can fill with filtered or heated water. Use water purification drops (or pills), which you may bring from home or purchase in Kathmandu, as they work better.
