Manaslu Luxury Trek Overview

The Manaslu Luxury Trek offers a more tranquil and personalized trekking experience, as it is less crowded than the well-known Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek. Trekkers can experience a unique blend of luxury and adventure with the Manaslu Luxury Trek, which offers luxurious accommodations and amenities alongside the opportunity to explore Nepal's remote and breathtaking Manaslu region.

Beginning in the energetic capital city of Nepal, where you will stay in cozy three-star hotels and take in Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Manaslu Luxury Trek begins.  You will take a private vehicle from Kathmandu to Machha Khola the next day, heading north along the stunning Budi Gandaki River to the settlement of Deng. The trail starts wide before getting narrower as you get closer to the river valleys.

Along the way, you will come across high-altitude settlements that are thriving centers of Buddhist culture, with a majority of the residents being Tibetan or Gurung. You will encounter centuries-old stone homes with elaborate carvings, Buddhist stupas, and prayer wheels as you traverse Ghap, Namrung, Shyala, and Samagaun.

After passing Samdo and Dharamsala, you will arrive at Larkya La Pass (5,106m), one of the trek's highest locations and the journey's ultimate goal. The expansive vistas of deep valleys, snow-capped summits, and glaciers will be visible from this pass. You will witness the snow-capped splendor of Mount Manaslu and the neighboring peaks, including Himlung, Annapurna II, Kangguru Himal, Cheo Himal, Larkya Peak, and Gyaji Kang.

Yak Kharka, Goa, Dharapani, and Besisahar, which restore terraced farms and verdant valleys, are on your way downhill from Bimthang's grassy moraine area. The people who live here are farmers. They cultivate a range of crops, including potatoes, millet, barley, and lead a modest yet close-to-nature lifestyle.

Similarly, the Manaslu forests are home to a wealth of wildlife, including the Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, elusive musk deer, snow leopard, big cat, and Himalayan griffon vulture, among others. Even though these sightings are scarce, there is a greater chance of seeing them in their natural habitat if you go to Manaslu in the spring. Lower areas of Manaslu will be covered in vivid rhododendron blooms in shades of red, pink, and white if you trek there in the spring or autumn season.

How to get prepared for the Manaslu Luxury Trek?

  • Physical Fitness: We at Green Valley Nepal Trek always suggest starting training at least 6 to 8 weeks before participating in the Manaslu Luxury trek. You need to focus on cardio (like hiking, cycling, running, and swimming), leg strength, and stamina. Practice walking with a loaded backpack and try hikes with gradual altitude gain if possible.
  • Mental Preparation: Even though it's a luxury trek, keep in mind that you are heading to a remote and high-altitude region, so be ready for limited connectivity and unpredictable terrain. Embrace the peace, simplicity, and challenge of the mountains.
  • Pack Smart, Not Heavy: While porters will carry most of your load, pack essentials like quality hiking boots, layers for changing weather, a good down jacket, gloves, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. You can take a look at a full packing list for trekking in the Manaslu region that is prepared by an expert from Green Valley Nepal Treks.
  • Acclimatization: Even with luxury services, you will still be trekking above 5,000 meters. Choose an itinerary that includes proper acclimatization days and don’t rush. Stay hydrated and listen to your body to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Invest in the Right Gear: Though luxury lodges offer comfort, the trail still demands durable trekking gear. Invest in high-quality trekking poles, waterproof clothing, and UV-protection sunglasses for both safety and convenience.

Your trekking journey continues as you leave behind the peaceful village of Samagaun and make your way toward the highland settlement of Samdo. The trail unfolds with awe-inspiring views of the towering Himalayan peaks, including the majestic Mt. Manaslu, as you pass through alpine meadows and rugged landscapes.

This portion of the trek offers a gradual ascent to an altitude of 3,875 meters, where the terrain becomes increasingly stark and dramatic. The scenery transitions from forested hills to open valleys and rocky ridgelines, reflecting the raw, untouched beauty of the Manaslu region.

Samdo is the final human settlement before crossing the challenging Larke La Pass into the Manang region. Home to over 200 residents living in around 40 traditional Tibetan-style houses, this remote village offers a unique cultural experience and an essential stop for acclimatization and rest before the next leg of the trek.

Rather than staying idle, you can take a scenic and gradual hike to Rui La (4,998 meters), a picturesque viewpoint located near the Tibetan border. Starting early in the morning, the trail winds through dry, open terrain with minimal vegetation, typical of the high Himalayan landscape.

The hike to Rui La offers a unique opportunity to witness the raw beauty of the trans-Himalayan region. As you ascend, sweeping views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks unfold, and you will also get a close look at the impressive Fukang Glacier. With clear weather and a bit of luck, you might spot high-altitude wildlife such as Himalayan blue sheep, marmots, and pikas.

As you approach Dharamsala (4,460 meters), the terrain becomes more rugged, and you will begin to feel the effects of high altitude. Despite its simplicity, the location provides a stunning base camp setting at the foot of the pass, with awe-inspiring views and a peaceful atmosphere that prepares you mentally and physically for the next day’s challenge.

Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Himlung Himal, unfold before your eyes, offering breathtaking panoramas that make every bit of effort worthwhile. The silence of the high mountains adds a meditative quality to your journey.

Upon reaching the summit of Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters, you will feel an incredible sense of achievement. At Haampuk, keep an eye out for a few natural rock shelters and cross your first suspension bridge of the day. As you continue, you will reach Yak Kharka, where a second suspension bridge leads you closer to the remains of past glacial activity from the Suti Glacier.

Eventually, you will arrive at Goa, a laid-back Gurung village surrounded by farms and fields. It’s a great place to rest, with views of Mount Manaslu, a local power supply, and even a waterfall nearby known as Kilpu.

Eventually, you will reach Dharapani, a vibrant village in the Lamjung district that blends old-world charm with modern conveniences. The Sangey Choling Gompa, a prominent local monastery, is worth a visit if time permits.

Rhododendron woods, which cover the pathways in red, pink, and white hues, are one of the most captivating aspects of spring.  Additionally, spring offers the chance to see a variety of species, such as musk deer, Himalayan langurs, and rare birds.  Regarding the cultural element, the celebration of Lhosar, the Tibetan New Year, brings the villages along the trail to life.

    • Autumn (September to November)

In Manaslu, autumn is the best time of year to participate in trekking.  You may take in the clean air and verdant surroundings after the monsoon rains.  At lower elevations, the temperatures during this season range from 15 to 20°C, whereas at higher elevations, such as Larkya La Pass, the maximum temperatures range from 5 to 10°C.

Magnificent views of Mt. Manaslu, the surrounding peaks of the Annapurna and Ganesh Himal ranges, and the glacial valleys are presented by the bright skies.  Furthermore, the finest trail conditions occur in the autumn season, when there is less likelihood of rain or snow and the trails are dry.

Following that, you might come across people celebrating Dashain and Tihar, two of Nepal's most important holidays, while hiking the trek.

Food and Meals on Manaslu Luxury Trek

You will get the opportunity to enjoy a fusion of regional cuisine and gourmet selections while on the luxury Manaslu trek. You will have 13 breakfasts, 12 lunches, and 11 dinners during the entire trip.

A variety of freshly prepared coffee or tea, cereals, eggs, pancakes, and fresh fruit are usually served for breakfast. With a blend of Nepali and Western cuisine, lunches and evenings are substantial and well-balanced. Dal Bhat (rice and lentil soup), momo (dumplings), Tibetan-style noodles, pasta, grilled meats, and freshly baked bread are some of the dishes you may encounter.

Accommodation Facilities on the Luxury Manaslu Trek

Your journey blends comfort with authenticity. In Kathmandu, you will stay in 3-star hotels or higher, with options to upgrade to 4- or 5-star accommodations upon request.

During the trek, you will stay in the best available tea houses and lodges along the trail. Most rooms are twin-sharing with basic furnishings like wooden beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. While facilities are modest, premium tea houses in villages like Sama Gaun and Namrung offer private rooms with attached bathrooms, solar-heated showers, and better bedding for added comfort.

Bathrooms are generally shared and basic, often with Asian-style squat toilets. Hot showers (usually bucket showers) may require a small fee, and availability decreases at higher altitudes. Heated common areas serve as cozy dining spots where trekkers relax and enjoy fresh meals.

Your guide handles all logistics, ensuring that you receive the top amenities available on the route, so you can focus on enjoying the trek in comfort, even in the Himalayas' remote terrain.

How difficult is the Luxury Manaslu Trek?

The Manaslu Luxury Trek is considered moderately challenging, even with added comfort and services. It takes you through remote high-altitude regions, steep trails, and unpredictable weather conditions, making it a rewarding yet demanding adventure.

    • Altitude Gain and Acclimatization: The trek begins around 930 meters (Machha Khola) and reaches up to 5,106 meters at Larkya La Pass. This drastic gain in altitude over a short period can put you at risk of altitude sickness.
    • Trail Conditions: Expect to navigate steep climbs, rocky sections, narrow cliffside trails, and stone staircases. Crossing long suspension bridges and descending from Larkya La Pass requires balance, stability, and focus.
    • Weather and Temperature: The weather in high-altitude areas like Dharmasala and Larkya La can change without warning. Even during peak seasons, trekkers might face sudden snowfall, biting winds, or sub-zero temperatures.
    • Remoteness and Facilities: Although this is a luxury trek, many parts of the Manaslu region remain remote and underdeveloped, so don’t expect consistent heating, internet, or attached bathrooms in every stop.
    • Required Fitness Level: One of the most challenging days is the Larkya La Pass crossing, which can take over 8 hours, including steep uphill climbs and tough descents.
