Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek Overview

If you are looking for a brand-new trekking spot in the Manaslu region, the Lower Manaslu Community-Based Eco Trail Trek is an excellent option. On this trek, you will explore the natural beauty and diversity of Nepal’s Gorkha district, renowned for its historical and archaeological significance.

The Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek is a fresh, less-trodden, and nature-friendly destination in the Manaslu region. Generally, the trek is well-known for historical, pilgrimage, agro-tourism, and community-based homestay tours. Besides this, Manakamana Temple, Sita Cave, traditional arts, glamorous mountain views, Gorkha Museum, Gorakhnath Cave, and a historic landmark, Gorkha Durbar, make this trek stand out in trekkers' eyes.

Instead of a thrilling flight, you will start with a 3-hour scenic drive from Kathmandu to Kurnitar, following the Trishuli River. From Kurintar, you will take a few minutes cable drive that connects you to the Manakamana Temple Cable Car, the first cable car in Nepal. En route, you will see the pristine and powerful Manakamana Temple. People believe that a wish made at this temple will come true. Every year, numerous worshipers visit the temple, sharing their wishes with the Royal Goddess of King Gorkha.

Primarily, your first leg starts from here. Passing through Bakeshwari Mahadev Temple, you will continue your journey to Ghairung, which leads to Bungkot and Kaule Bhangar. Further progress passes through nearby Gorkha Bazaar and concludes at Gyampesal via Tallo Thotneri.

Trekking in Lower Manaslu offers the historical and archeological greatness of the Gorkha district, which is a perfect place for an excursion. During this, you will explore the historical Gorkha Palace, Gorkha Museum, and Gorkhanath Cave, 10 meters below Gorkha Palace. Likewise, you will grasp the historical artifacts and archeological monuments at the Gorkha Museum. You will learn about the eminent contribution of the legendary brave warriors of Gorkha against British soldiers during the Second World War and how the late King Prithvi Narayan Shah unified the first capital of Nepal, Gorkha. A Nepali proverb, "Shiksha Na Paaye Kashi Janu and Nyaya Na Paaye Gorkha," also manifests the Gorkhali heroism.

After a good day at Gorkha, you will shift toward Bachek overlooking the Daraudi River, a seven-hour drive over a mountain road. From Bachek, you will take a short hike to a beautiful place, Sirandanda. Sirandanda is best known for its rich diversity of medicinal herbs, and the sunshine over the miraculous Manaslu Himalayan ranges is unparalleled. Likewise, heading to Barpak and Laprak is an opportunity to visit the traditional Gurung villages and experience their unique culture and home-based yummy foods.

From Laprak, you will access a smooth trail to reach the open pasture land of Nambai Kharka. The next day's hike to Darche Danda opens with Himalayan surprises, which connect you with more than 20 high peaks of the Manaslu range, Annapurna range, Ganesh Himal range, Gangapuran, and Machhapuchhre (Fish-Tail). After exploring the ranges from the top, you will descend gradually to Tallo Thotneri and hike to the famous and prestigious Sita Cave. Significantly, the cave holds a supreme religious value among Hindus encircled in a dense forest. After exploring the cave, you will continue your walk to Gyampesal, the ending point of the Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek, and head back to Kathmandu.

The Lower Manaslu Eco Area is captivated by nature's grandeur and its historical, ecological, religious, cultural, and Himalayan significance, including the Lower Manaslu peaks. The region possesses every quality that could make it a favored tourist destination in Nepal. However, only a few trekkers have explored it. Nonetheless, you will see the locals involved in tourism development and promotion in the district.

Like the popular Manaslu Circuit Trek and Tsum Valley Trek, the lower area of the Manaslu Eco Trek is less congested, so it is an open call to experience the region's delights in 2025 and 2026. Depending on your arrival schedule, our office staff will be waiting for you to greet you at the gateway of the Tribhuvan International Airport. The staff will transfer you to your hotel in a private vehicle and assist you until the hotel's check-in procedure ends. After setting up, you will reunite with the trekking groups or guides for a pre-trip meeting.

  • 3-Star Hotel in Thamel

The trip begins with a 3-hour scenic drive from Kathmandu to Kurintar. During this journey, the route mostly follows Prithvi Highway along the bank of the Trishuli River. A 10-minute cable ride from Kurintar will connect you with the first cable car in Nepal, Manakamana Cable Car. It acts as a bridge to visit the historical Manakamana Temple, constructed by Lakhan Thapa in the 17th century. The temple attracts large numbers of pilgrims, tourists, and climbers across the globe.

After lunch at the Manakamana Temple area, the first leg begins toward Bakeswari Mahadev Temple. Situated 2 kilometers north of Manakamana Temple, the temple is renowned for its divine spirituality. About 500 m further progress leads to a sacred Siddha Lakhan Thapa cave, which also presents a miraculous view of the region, and a 250-year-old cave constructed by the late King Prithvi Narayan Shah.

Following this beautiful cultural interlude, the trek descends to Tinmane Bhanjyang and concludes at Ghairung. At Ghairung, you will favor the local homestay facilities, as lodging is rarely available in the area.

  • Homestay
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 7 to 8 Hours
  • 109 Kilometers

After an enjoyable Ghairung homestay, you will begin toward the beautiful hub, Gorkha Bazaar. The trek gears toward a historical Bungkot village, where the dominant Magar resided. Besides this historical charm, you will see the Lakhan Thapa Memorial Park, a bust in the name of Martyr Lakhan Thapa. The park reflects prestigious and historical artifacts, including Thapas' sword and stone spout.

These ancient wonders are independently protected and preserved by the locals. Likewise, the village is well known for its homestay facilities and local organic products. A 1.5-hour walk from Bungkot takes you to the Gorkha Bazaar. The Bazaar is the headquarters of the Gorkha district, where many lodging options are available. Overnight in a good teahouse/lodge at Gorkha Bazaar.

  • Teahouse or lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 5 to 6 Hours
  • 13.3 Kilometers

The Gorkha Bazar is significantly better for excursions. The Gorkha Palace, Gorakhnath Cave, and Gorkha Museum are the major attractions of the place.

Gorkha Palace is 300 m above Gorkha Bazaar, where the unification of modern Gorkha started. Aesthetically, the palace reveals Gorkha's historical art. Besides this, fantastic mountain vistas and surroundings are noticeable from the top of the palace.

Gorakhnath Cave, the cave of Gorakhnath Baba (a sage), is 10 m below the palace. Generally, he was a guide of the Shah dynasty, whose principalities assisted in forming a new Nepal, and the district got the Gorkha title from his name.

Further, the Gorkha Museum is at Gorkha Bazaar, which represents the historical and archeological monuments of Gorkha, including sculptures, cash, articles, and personal assets of King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Overnight in a teahouse at Gorkha Bazaar.

  • Teahouse or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

After the Gorkha Bazaar excursion, you will head to your next destination, Sirandanda. Sirandanda is a 6-7 hour walk from Gorkha Bazaar. En route, you will cross narrow, curved mountain roads overlooking the Daraundi River and reach a beautiful Bachek village. From Bachek, Sirandanda is about a 1-2 hour ascent via Chachek at an altitude of 1900 meters. A Hyolmo village is situated on its hilltop, as the name Sirandanda (hilltop) suggests.

Dudh Pokhari, Nagepokhari, Bhot Dodhar, Chima Dharadi, and a tea backyard are remarkable. Likewise, the sunrise and sunset on Mt. Manaslu are a golden paradise in the Nepal Manaslu region.

Besides this, the village is famed for its rich herbal medicinal plants, such as Nirmasi, Jatamasi, Rato unyu, Jedamasi, Yarsagumba, and Satuwa. At the same time, you will observe the organic vegetation, especially potatoes and tea leaves. This area trek gives a real taste of ethnicity. However, it struggles to find its location on the Nepal tourism map. Overnight in a teahouse at Sirandanda.

  • Teahouse or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours

Leaving Sirandanda, you will shift toward the northeast for Barpak. The trek passes through Mathar village and leads to Ghyachowk for lunch. The area lacks a hotel, but you can ask the locals for food. From Ghyachowk, Barpak is a 4-5 hour trek through Dewalsara, Sum River, Daraudi River, and Goje via Alagang.

Barpak is the habitat of the Gurung, Tamang, Sunar, and Ghale communities. Ex-army Late Capt. Gaje Ghale, winner of the famous Victoria Cross medal, lived here. Clustered stone-roofed houses, stone-constructed slender alleys, and beautiful Buddha Himal are the day's highlights. Additionally, the village includes all basic facilities, such as round-the-clock electricity, internet, and lodge access. Overnight in typical homestay rooms at Baprak with a full board meal.

  • Homestay
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours

Departing from Barpak for Laprak is a gradual ascent (2100 m), a walk of 6 hours. During this time, you will cross a Basukang junction that leads to Rupina La, and further progress touches the beautiful and charming Laprak village.

Laprak is in a landslide-prone zone and experiences enormous snowfall, especially from November to March. The area is a settlement of the Gurung, which signifies the typical culture and lifestyle of the local Gurung community. Additionally, the area is a stopover for the Manaslu climbers. However, the locality encompasses only two lodges. Meanwhile, you will access a typical homestay for the night.

  • Homestay
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 5 to 6 Hours
  • 16.4 Kilometers

Today is the biggest day of your 12-day Eco Trail journey. Starting from the Laprak village, you will access the ultimate point of this trip, Nambai Kharka (2,700 m). From the top, the range seems remarkably breathtaking. Generally, the hike continues with a moderate walk of about 4 hours from Laprak into an open pastureland, Nambai Kharka.

Here, the people are mostly Laprakis, the residents of Laprak. Locals are engaged in agriculture for their food and shelter. At the same time, hunting animals is restricted in the area. Generally, you will take a homestay for a night's stay, which may lack toilet facilities.

  • Homestay
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 4 to 5 Hours
  • 15 Kilometers

Today's trek traversed varying altitudes. Starting from the base of 2,700 m of Nambai Kharka, Darche Danda (3,220 m) is a gradual climb, later descending to Tallo Thotneri (1,685 m). These significant altitude changes offer the best and most alluring views from Darche Danda, including a golden sunrise over more than one hundred eighty mighty peaks. In addition, the Danda holds religious beliefs: a prayer to the hill's deity hinders natural calamities, even for clear visibility.

Further, the trek descends to the Gurung community, Tallo Thotneri. Though the region has no lodge, you will enjoy traditional dances and yummy dishes in a homestay.

  • Homestay
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours
  • 14 Kilometers

Departing from Tallo Thotneri, you will hike about 1.8 kilometers to reach the religious Sita cave. This cave visit in a dense forest is top-notch, as it holds religious beliefs among the Hindus. Goddess Sita, wife of Lord Ram, used to live in the cave, as per myth. Additionally, you can participate in a big Mela on the 9th day of Ram Navami in Chaitra (March/April). From Sita Cave, the trek continues for about an hour to the final leg of your Lower Manaslu Eco Trail journey, Gyampesal. At Gyampesal, you will be accommodated in a camp or opt for a homestay.

  • Homestay or Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 5 to 6 Hours
  • 12 Kilometers

Today is the day to leave the Nepal Manaslu region. You will take a scenic drive early from Gyampesal to enjoy the day's road views. En route, you will experience beautiful hillsides, rivers, diverse landscapes, cultivated land, and ancient and modern houses. Additionally, you will realize the road view competes with the air drive. After a 7-8-hour ride, you will reach the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu, and check in at your hotel. As the time favors, take a cool bath and relax. In the evening, you will join us for a farewell dinner and overnight in your cozy bed.

  • 3-Star Hotel in Thamel
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 12 marks the day to say goodbye to Nepal. Depending on your flight schedule, you may engage in last-minute shopping for handicrafts as souvenirs in Kathmandu. Furthermore, arriving at the airport 3 hours before is significant for a stress-free check-in process.

Useful Info

Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek Best Time

The Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek offers its best during two seasons: spring and autumn. These two periods are the optimum and preferred time for the Nepal Trek.

  • Spring: A visit to the Lower Manaslu region is favored during spring (March to May) because of its flowering rhododendrons, spectacular mountain views, and pleasant sunny weather.
  • Autumn (Falls): Autumn opens another trekking window for outdoor Himalayan adventure. Generally, it falls from September to November, with chilly nights, stable weather for harvesting, and excellent mountain visibility for photography. The region might get more traffic during peak season compared to others.

The winter (December to February) is frigid and might experience snowfall, especially at high altitudes. Likewise, the summer (June to August) makes the trails slippery and muddy, and the risk of landslides is at its peak. Consequently, avoid winter and summer for outdoor activities. The weather in the high Himalayas is uncertain, so it is best to check the weather forecast while trekking.

Food and Accommodation Availability on Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek

Depending on your budget and comfort, you can prefer the best hotel services in Kathmandu. While hiking in the Lower Manaslu region, you will sleep in a teahouse or lodge. Each room includes two shared beds with all basic amenities. As you ascend to high altitudes, the accommodation is limited to homestays. For a private room, early booking is paramount at additional costs. The region might have more traffic during peak season, so carrying a sleeping bag can be an alternative option.

While visiting Lower Manaslu, you will taste fresh, hygienic, and delicious food, including Western and continental cuisine. The menu includes noodles, thukpa, spaghetti, desserts, sandwiches, pancakes, eggs, bread, chicken, and more. These food menus can vary depending on the teahouses. Besides this, dal, bhat, and tarkari are popularly available in all teahouses. During a homestay, food options are limited.

Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek Difficulty

The Nepal Lower Manaslu Trek is a moderate to demanding trek. Some of the factors that contribute to it as a demanding trek are:

  • Altitude: The trek takes you to a height of 2,700 m at Nambai Kharka. At such an altitude, altitude sickness is a supreme concern, so appropriate acclimatization is vital.
  • Trek's Length: The journey runs for 12 days. Each day, you will walk 5-6 hours daily on average and cover a 15-20 kilometer distance, which is not a piece of cake.
  • Weather: Weather changes in the high Himalayas create substantial difficulties for climbers, even in the best trekking season.
  • Route: The Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek is an off-beaten path trek with some steep ups and downs. Walking on the rocky and uneven trail makes the trail ascend and descend more challenging.

Despite these challenges, the Eco Trail Trek is rewarding and worthwhile, with perfect gear and clothing essentials, especially for physically strong people. Likewise, hiring a porter and a licensed guide will help to tackle the problems safely and successfully.

Travel Insurance for Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek

The unpredictable weather, high altitudes, and steep rocky terrain of the Lower Manaslu Eco Trek can lead to unforeseen and undesirable injuries or accidents that increase unreasonable medical expenses. Likewise, medical support in the area is limited. Travel insurance serves as a financial safety net for the trekkers. As a safety net, it only covers medical bills during the trek.

Green Valley offers secure adventure trips, so purchasing the best travel insurance policy is highly recommended. Please read the policy coverage authentically and ensure it covers emergency evacuations, baggage losses, medical coverage, trip cancellation, or interruption. Moreover, the consideration of insurance providers and trekking agencies is significant.

Lower Manaslu Eco Trail Trek Packing List

Hiking in the high Himalayas is not a big deal, but a safe accomplishment is. Perfect packing essentials are the best approach for a secure and successful Lower Manaslu Eco Trail journey. Starting with three-layer clothes, a sleeping bag, waterproof and windproof jackets, a duffle bag, and the best hiking shoes, reward the Manaslu Eco Trails.

Likewise, printed maps, compasses, water bottles, water purification tablets, first aid kits, and personal items have no match in the high mountains. Best of all, escape from unnecessary load and pack light. A visit to our verified packing checklist for the Nepal Manasu region trek is notable before departure.

During this journey, Gorkha Bazaar was a real attraction for me. Visiting the ancient Gorkha Durbar (palace) perched above the town was like stepping into a time machine.
