One of the most recently well-liked adventure destinations in central-Western Nepal is Saribung Peak Climbing, which stands at 6328 meters above sea level. North-east of Lo-Manthang, close to the border between Nepal and Tibet, is Saribung Peak. With this adventure, you will get a fantastic chance to discover the distinctive Tibetan plateau of the Himalayas and the settlements that lie beyond Lo-Mangtang Mountain. Saribung Peak Climbing Route is famous for being a portion of the old trade route that ran from the Tibetan plateau in China to southern India. It is also a portion of the renowned Silk Road as well.

Saribung Peak is a relatively young peak that first became climbable in 2006. Since then, adventurers from all over the world have been traveling to it. Saribung Peak Climbing provides the ideal fusion of adventure, wilderness, and cultural exploration. Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m), the seventh-highest peak in the world, is located in the area, which is a part of the Annapurna Conservation Area of Nepal. Several peaks over 6000 meters high may be found in this region, including the highest pass in the world, Thorong La Pass (5416m), Tukuche Peak (6920m), Nilgiri South (6839m), Yakwakang Peak (6462m), and Damodar Himal (6004m).

No prior mountaineering expertise is necessary for the Saribung Peak Climbing excursion, but it is physically exhausting since you must ascend the steep, icy routes while passing over the Saribung La pass at a height of 5600 meters. The journey to the different breathtaking vistas of the Land beyond the Mountains is a part of the experience of climbing a Himalayan peak. The traditional ways of the people in the Mustang and Nar Phu Villages, the dry and mountainous landscapes, the blue Damodar Kunda, and the magnificent views of the Tibetan Plateau are all unique aspects of the Saribung Peak Climbing Itinerary.

Kathmandu is the starting point for the 24 Days Saribung Peak Climbing Itinerary. You will drive to Pokhara after spending a full day sightseeing in Kathmandu. As you travel along the winding roads, you will see how the locals get by day to day. You will fly over beautiful mountain scenery from Pokhara to Jomsom. Following the path that leads north towards Kagbeni, you will begin your journey of Saribung Peak after landing safely at Jomsom's airstrip. On its direction to Lo Manthang, the path travels through a variety of landscapes, via a number of settlements and historic gompas. After a full day of touring in Lo Manthang, you will continue traveling via the villages of Yara and Ghuma Thanti before arriving at Saribung Base Camp.

It takes strong physical condition, technical expertise, and acclimatization to climb from Saribung Base Camp to the summit. The peak has two summits, with the main summit requiring a challenging ridge crossing that necessitates the use of ropes and other climbing equipment. While the climb is strenuous, the breathtaking vistas of the Mustang valley, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other peaks make it worthwhile. You will descend to Phedi High Camp after reaching the summit, then to Phu, Meta, Koto, Dharapani, and ultimately Kathmandu, where the Saribung Peak Climbing Itinerary comes to a completion.

Besides the adventure and physical challenge, Saribung Peak climbing also offers an opportunity to explore the unique culture and lifestyle of the Mustang region. The region has a distinct Tibetan culture and is known for its ancient monasteries, chortens, and traditional festivals. The Upper Mustang region was closed to outsiders until 1992, and even today, it requires a special permit to enter. Therefore, climbing Saribung Peak is not only an adventure but also a cultural journey.

Saribung Peak climbing can be done throughout the year, but the best time is during the spring and autumn seasons when the weather is stable and clear. The trek to Saribung Peak Base Camp can take up to 14 days, depending on the itinerary and the route taken. The climb to the summit can take an additional 5-7 days, depending on the weather conditions and the climbers' acclimatization.

The picturesque Pokhara valley is home to several lakes, including Begnas, Fewa, Rupa, Dipang, Maidi, Khaste, Gunde, and Nyureni. From the Pokhara Valley, you can also see Annapurna, Machapuchare, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Lamjung Himal.

It takes around 25 minutes to fly from Pokhara to Jomsom across the Mountains. The aircraft departs from the picturesque setting of Pokhara and arrives at Jomsom Airport, which is surrounded by lonely hills and snow-covered peaks. As many people from Jomsom visit Muktinath, the Saribung Peak Climbing Adventure will provide you the opportunity to see people on their spiritual quests for enlightenment.

A magnificent hike along the dry Kali Gandaki River valley connects Jomsom with the fort at Kagbeni, a historic trading post, and a Buddhist monastery. The restricted area of the Upper Mustang is just south of Kagbeni. Kagbeni is located just south of the Upper Mustang's restricted region, where you will stay overnight.

  • Hotel or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 3 to 4 Hours
  • 11.4 Kilometers

You will start your hike early in the morning to avoid being caught in the afternoon's fierce Mustang wind. Before proceeding to Chuksang along the eastern bank of the Kali Gandaki River, you must present your Saribung Peak Climbing Permit at the Kagbeni checkpoint. On your trek, you will get to see some breathtaking vistas of Mt. Nilgiri as it glows orange in the sunrise light.

The area along the river can be windy and dusty, so you will need sunglasses and possibly a face mask to protect your mouth and nose. As you reach Tangbe Village, you will have passed through the characteristic red sandstone pillars and rock formations of the Mustang, which were formed by many years of erosion. Tangbe is a delightful village with gorgeous apple orchards, whitewashed cottages, and barley fields. After there, a relatively narrow canyon will take you to Chele, a little community nestled on a ridge.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 5 to 6 Hours
  • 11.2 Kilometers

You will depart Chele after breakfast and continue the route as it leads to a tiny grassy basin. From here, you will climb to the 3735-meter-high Dajori La Pass and then descend to the charming town of Samar. Before rising sharply into Bhena La Pass at 3838 meters, the Saribung Peak Climbing Route from Samar quickly drops into a severely degraded riverbed.

Before climbing to Yamda La Pass, which is at 3860 meters, you will briefly descend. From here, you will get breathtaking views of the Upper Mustang valleys. You may reach the massive stupa at Chhungar by making a little descent and then an upward walk. To get to the flat-bottomed valley and the settlement of Ghiling from here, turn right at the cairn and descend.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours
  • 15 Kilometers

After breakfast, you will leave the Ghiling settlement and ascend steadily to the Jhaite village. Crossing the Nyi Pass, which is located at an altitude of 4,010 meters above sea level, will be the biggest challenge of the day. You can get to Ghami, one of the biggest settlements in Lo Manthang, via the pass. Following that, your route for climbing Saribung Peak will cross a suspension bridge over the Ghami River and the second pass, Tsarang La. (3,870m). You will ultimately arrive in Tsarang after passing the settlement of Drakmar.

Tibetan Buddhists live in the village of Tsarang, hence Buddhism dominates the local culture. You can leave your bag at the tea house and continue to the monastery Tsarang Gompa, which has been around for more than 500 years. When it came to salt trade, Tsarang served as a crucial junction between India, Tibet, and the neighboring countries of Nepal. You will see verdant fields of crops, which is undoubtedly a shift in landscape from the previous few days.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours
  • 11 Kilometers

After breakfast at Charang, you will continue Saribung Peak Climbing Trip by taking the route that descends to cross the suspension bridge across Tsarang Khola. You will climb towards Lo La pass, which is at 3950 meters, once you have crossed the river. You will be able to see the northern Mustang and Lo-Manthang in breathtaking detail from the pass's summit. The historic walled capital of Upper Mustang, Lo-Manthang, is reachable by a short descent from the pass's summit.

Throughout the route to Lo Manthang, breathtaking vistas of Annapurna I, Bhrikuti Peak, Tilicho Peak, and Damodar Kunda will be yours to enjoy. The village's historic mud-brick homes and gompas bring you back in time. The settlement, which has been greatly influenced by Tibetans, is where the previous monarch of the Upper Mustang resides. You may unwind in a tea house and take in the beautiful scenery after a strenuous hike.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours
  • 14 Kilometers

You may take advantage of today by touring the area around Lo-Manthang as it is an acclimatization and rest day, as per the Saribung Peak Climbing Itinerary. Around 50 kilometers separate Lo-Manthang from the Tibetan border. Between Nepal and Tibet, Lo-Manthang operated as the primary commercial crossing point for salt and clothing. The 6-meter wall is a notable and enticing feature of this picturesque town. Beautiful towers may be seen at Lo-Manthang in every direction. This fortified city has a number of significant religious and cultural sites.

The King's Palace, the museum, the Jampa Monastery, and locations where Thangka paintings are displayed are a few of the most significant structures. In 1992, the Lo-Manthang region in Nepal was made accessible to tourists. Despite the fact that the township is now accessible to tourists, just 1000 visitors are permitted to come here each year. Only travelers from accredited trekking agencies are permitted access to this spot. After some exploration, you will return to your lodging to spend the night sleeping.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Today, you will depart from Lo-Manthang and go via Lo La before arriving in Dhi. This is the beginning of a magnificent Saribung Peak Climbing Journey that will offer an incredible panoramic view of the surroundings. After hiking along a ridge and then descending steeply through crumbling cliffs, you will reach Dhi. The scenic settlement is situated along the banks of the Kali Gandaki, where you can find a collection of homes, a stretch of fields, and some trees.

Before continuing to Yara, it is expected to take a break for lunch at Dhi. A lovely village named Yara is located far above the river. Like most of the villages in the Upper Mustang, this one has terraced fields as well as a collection of traditional houses. It's the only location in your lodge where you might encounter a group of enterprising local women selling bracelets and trinkets.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 6 to 7 Hours
  • 21 Kilometers

The Saribung Peak Climbing Trip Itinerary's shortest trekking day is today when you go to the Luri Cave Monastery. Take the brief but difficult ascent to Luri on the slope to the north of Yara. The monasteries are much more intriguing than the Luri caves, which are already captivating. The monastery is said to have been built in the fifteenth century in response to a divine order from a god.

You may see pictures, chortens, and the condition of antiquities. The gorgeous mandala is unimaginably beautiful. A relatively exact copy of Luri Cave Gompa is the Tashi Kabum, which you may also visit. A destroyed Chorten and a lovely mandala are also present. Your tour guide will reveal myths from the past that describe how these caverns were built.

  • Tea House or Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 3 to 4 Hours
  • 5 Kilometers

You will today take the path that passes through the canyon and leads to Ghuma Tanthi. You will walk along a path through pastureland and hilltops that includes a number of ups and downs. You will get stunning views of Mount Dhaulagiri while on the trip. Before making the descent to Ghuma Tanthi, you will climb towards a pass at 4920 meters.

In reality, Ghuma Tanthi is a location created to house Buddhist pilgrims traveling to the revered Damodar Kunda Lakes. Because Ghuma Thanti is located along the route to Damodar Kunda, it is frequently visited by pilgrims and hikers. The views of the Kyamupani River are the only notable features of Ghuma Thanti. Together with a few permanent communities, the vast Tibetan Plateau is home to several camps.

  • Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 5 to 6 Hours
  • 12 Kilometers

Once you leave Ghuma Tanthi, you will climb steadily towards a pass at 5320 meters. You will see breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges from the summit of the pass. Following that, you will descend to the base of Parche Khola before ascending once more to a new pass at 5480 meters. The trail to Saribung Peak leads you to the holy and pristine lakes close to Damodar Himal.

You will get to see Damodar Kunda, which is one of the day's main attractions and a revered Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage destination. Here, you may unwind for a little period while taking photographs. You will eventually arrive at Namta Khola as you go on your walk from there. You will build a tent next to the river. After the strenuous hike, sip some warm soup and relax.

  • Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 7 to 8 Hours
  • 15 Kilometers

Today, as you make your way to Saribung's base camp, you will progressively rise from Namta Khola to higher heights. Through the alpine greenery and across terrain that resembles the Tibetan Plateau, the Saribung Peak route will lead you. With hard twists today, the trail becomes much more difficult.

Take a meal for the day and drink plenty of water because the area is largely remote and lacks tea houses or lodges. You will ultimately arrive at the base camp after taking a somewhat challenging path. You should rapidly erect your tents at the base camp after getting there and inspect your climbing gear and health as needed.

  • Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 8 to 9 Hours
  • 24 Kilometers

Your body needs to adapt to the considerable climb in altitude that will occur in the next few days. Thus, today is an opportunity for acclimatization and preparation for climbing. Following breakfast, your guide will show you the fundamental climbing techniques including belaying, rappelling, and so on. Also, you will learn how to utilize climbing tools including a harness, an ice ax, an ascender, a set of crampons, a karabiner, and others. This preparation gives you a high level of confidence before the climb in addition to assisting you with the journey the following day. If you have any questions, ask your guide who can answer them all. In addition, if you want to see the Damodar and Annapurna mountain ranges, you may trek up to the closest viewpoint.

  • Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

You will depart the base camp today and go up the path in a gentle rise in the direction of Camp I. Your journey will get a little more difficult as you pass through rugged and icy terrain. You will need to wear crampons in a few slick spots. Resting occasionally might help you refuel after the arduous voyage of today. With stunning views of Khumjunggar Himal and Damodar Himal, you will continue your ascent of Saribung Peak as you make your way to Camp I, where you will find an excellent camping spot.

You must navigate the ice blocks and traverse the western moraine to reach your destination. The Damodar Himal is magnificently visible. You may pack your belongings and have a nap because the guides will have already set up your tent. After lunch, take a short stroll to see the mountains that are on full show. Get to bed early since you will need to be up in the morning before it is light to begin the journey to Saribung Peak.

  • Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 5 to 6 Hours
  • 5 Kilometers

The most eagerly awaited day of the Saribung Peak Climbing Itinerary is today since you will be reaching the summit. Your ascent will start early in the morning, at 1 am. It is preferable to start your climb early in the morning to prevent a sudden change in the weather because the winds in the mountain region can be unpredictable during the day. You will start by ascending the steep hill and rough terrain. Traverse glaciers with crevasses that lead to steep snow slopes. The climbing experience is helpful while navigating hills.

When necessary, the team will have previously placed ropes. You will eventually reach the highest summit by moving slowly and steadily. Being at such an altitude and having such beautiful sights is a true joy. Aside from the satisfaction of reaching the top, the surrounding peaks of Chhib Himal (6,650m), Kharsang Peak (6,225m), Gyajikhang (7,038m), Bhrikuti (6,460m), and Himlung (7,126m) are softly tucked around the mountain by the blue sky. Once the adrenaline has subsided, record some films and photos for your memories. Then take a gentle descent to Base Camp to spend the night.

As you go closer to Phu village, you will have the chance to discover the cultural and ecological variety of nearby communities. The Phu stone village might be 800 years old, according to estimates.

Depending on the time of year you go on the Saribung Peak Climbing excursion, you can witness a plantation of crops and animals grazing in the meadows when you arrive at the Phu hamlet. After you have arrived at your tea house, unpack your things and leave them there. You may go to the Tashi Lhakhang Monastery, the last of the 108 Buddhist monasteries erected across the world by the legendary Karmapa Rimpoche. You can see the Himlung Himal peeking out towards the horizon while you take in its splendor.

You will eventually arrive at Kyang by continuing to follow the path that descends to the restricted valley that follows the Phu River. The track then drops and travels across some eroded moraine before reaching the Mruju Khola, which is the Lyapche Glacier's outflow.

You could see Blue Sheep in the remote area along the journey. The Khampa communities in Jhunam and Chyakhu are reached by traveling down a rough road. Here, you may see abandoned forts. Tibetan refugees have formerly lived there. Views of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal will occasionally appear along the route to complement the day. You will descend before arriving in Meta village.

    Useful Info

Saribung Peak Climbing Best Time, Season, and Months

The best time to climb Saribung Peak is during the spring and autumn seasons. The spring season, which runs from March to May, and the autumn season, which runs from September to November, offer the most favorable weather and climbing conditions for the Saribung Peak climb.

    • During the spring season, the weather is usually clear, and the temperatures are moderate, making it an ideal time for climbing. The snow and ice conditions are also relatively stable during this time, making it easier to climb steep ridges and glaciers. However, as the season progresses, the weather can become more unpredictable, with occasional snow and hailstorms.
    • The autumn season is also an excellent time to climb Saribung Peak, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. The autumn season offers stable weather conditions, making it easier to navigate the challenging terrain and high-altitude climate. However, as the season progresses towards November, the temperatures start to drop, and snow can start to accumulate, making the climb more challenging.

It is essential to avoid the monsoon season, which runs from June to August, as this period brings heavy rain, cloud cover, and poor visibility, making it difficult to climb. The winter season, which runs from December to February, is also not recommended for climbing, as the temperatures drop significantly, and the snow and ice conditions become unstable.

Food or Meal Availability on Saribung Peak Climbing

Due to the region's isolation and remoteness, food and meal options may be limited while climbing Saribung Peak. On the other hand, we will set up trekking and climbing teams with cooks and kitchen personnel who will serve you freshly prepared meals all the way up the mountain.

During the trekking portion of the journey, meals are usually prepared using local ingredients and traditional recipes, such as dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetables), momos (dumplings), and thukpa (noodle soup). These meals are rich in carbohydrates and protein, which are essential for providing the necessary energy for the climb. As you climb higher toward the peak, the availability of fresh ingredients becomes limited, and the meals become more basic. Meals such as fried rice, pasta, and noodles are commonly served. These meals are typically prepared using canned or dried ingredients and may not be as varied or flavorful as the meals served during the trekking portion of the climb.

It is important to note that while the meals are nutritious and filling, the options may be limited, and the food may not meet everyone's individual dietary preferences or requirements. Therefore, it is recommended to bring your own snacks and supplements, such as energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits, to supplement your diet during the climb. It is also crucial to stay hydrated during the climb, as the high altitude and physical activity can lead to dehydration. Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water, tea, and soup, is essential for maintaining your energy levels and preventing altitude sickness.

Accommodation Facility on Saribung Peak Climbing

Accommodation facilities on Saribung Peak Climbing can be basic and limited due to the remote location and high altitude. Most of the accommodations on the climb will be in the form of tea houses, lodges, or camping tents.

During the trekking portion of the Saribung Peak Climbing journey, tea houses and lodges are commonly used for accommodation. These are basic but comfortable, guesthouses that offer simple rooms with shared bathroom facilities. The rooms typically include a bed, a blanket, and a pillow. However, it is important to note that the availability of these accommodations can be limited, and it is advisable to book in advance.

As you climb higher toward the peak, the availability of tea houses and lodges becomes limited, and camping becomes necessary. The climbing groups will set up camping tents for you at designated campsites along the route. These campsites typically include a dining tent, sleeping tents, and toilet facilities.

It is important to note that the camping facilities will be basic, and you will need to bring your own sleeping bag and mat for insulation and comfort. It is also essential to bring warm clothing and a good quality sleeping bag, as the temperatures can drop significantly at higher altitudes. During the climb, it is important to acclimatize gradually to the high altitude, which may require rest days at certain elevations. These rest days will be spent at tea houses, lodges, or camping tents, depending on availability.

    Saribung Peak Climbing Difficulty Level

Saribung Peak Climbing is considered a challenging climb, requiring a high level of physical fitness, mountaineering skills, and experience. The peak has an elevation of 6,328 meters (20,751 feet) and is located in a remote and isolated region of the Himalayas. The climb involves trekking through rugged terrain, crossing high mountain passes, and summiting a challenging peak.

The climb involves steep ascents and descents, rocky and icy terrain, and exposure to high altitude and extreme weather conditions. Climbers need to have experience in using mountaineering equipment such as ice axes, crampons, ropes, and harnesses. Climbers must also have experience in technical climbing and be able to climb on snow and ice.

One of the major challenges of the climb is the high altitude, which can lead to altitude sickness. Altitude sickness can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath, and can be life-threatening if not treated properly. Therefore, climbers must acclimatize gradually to the high altitude, which may require rest days at certain elevations.

The climb also involves crossing high mountain passes such as the Saribung La Pass and the Damodar Kunda Pass, which can be challenging due to the steep and rocky terrain. Climbers must have experience in trekking in rugged terrain and be able to cross high-altitude passes safely.

Altitude Sickness and Remedies on Saribung Peak Climbing

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a common problem for climbers on the Saribung Peak Climbing. It is caused by the lack of oxygen at high altitudes and can occur above 3000 meters. The symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening conditions such as High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). Altitude sickness can be prevented and treated with several remedies. Here are some of the remedies for altitude sickness on Saribung Peak Climbing:

    • Acclimatization: Climbers should acclimatize gradually to the high altitude by spending several days at lower elevations before ascending to higher elevations. This allows the body to adjust to the lower oxygen levels and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
    • Hydration: Climbers should drink plenty of water and fluids to prevent dehydration, which can exacerbate the symptoms of altitude sickness.
    • Eat a Balanced Diet: Climbers should consume a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates and protein to maintain their energy levels and promote acclimatization.
    • Medications: Several medications can be used to prevent and treat altitude sickness, including acetazolamide and dexamethasone. These medications should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider.
    • Descending: If symptoms of altitude sickness become severe, climbers should descend to lower elevations to allow the body to recover.
    • Oxygen: Climbers can use supplemental oxygen to alleviate the symptoms of altitude sickness. Oxygen can be provided by portable oxygen concentrators or oxygen cylinders.
    • Rest: Climbers should rest and avoid strenuous activity if they experience symptoms of altitude sickness. This allows the body to recover and adjust to the high altitude.

In addition to these precautions, climbers should also be aware of the signs and symptoms of altitude sickness and communicate them to their trekking or climbing team. It is essential to take immediate action if any symptoms of altitude sickness occur, as the condition can quickly become life-threatening.
