Annapurna North Base Camp Trek Overview

Before going deep into North ABC Trek, let’s explore the history of this amazing trek, which is gaining popularity after COVID-19.

In 1950, a French expedition team under the leadership of Maurice Herzog was the first climber in history to reach the top of Annapurna I. At first, the group decided to begin searching for a path to either Annapurna or Dhaulagiri. They headed to the North Face of Annapurna after concluding that Dhaulagiri was too challenging.

The Annapurna North Base Camp Trek, also known as the French North Face Route, has gained popularity recently. They arrived at Annapurna's top without oxygen. They found the journey down from Annapurna to be both challenging and exciting. Dodging the snowstorm, avalanches, and other mishaps made for an insane descent.

Green Valley Nepal Trek has crafted the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek Itinerary for those individuals who are interested in the wilderness and less explored areas in the famous Annapurna region.

We provide this unique trekking itinerary to those who are interested in exploring the northwest side of Annapurna I's base camp. Although trekking is challenging, you can undoubtedly experience the Himalayas' splendor from a variety of sweeping perspectives. Natural hot springs, Gurung culture, Hiunchuli, Machhepuchare, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Nilgiri, and Annapurna South are the trek's primary highlights.

Despite the trail's abundance of natural diversity, only a small number of mountain lovers and adventurers are currently visiting Annapurna North Base Camp. Thus, a new and enduring experience is in store for you.

The North ABC Trek begins from Kathmandu to Pokhara; after that, you will drive from Pokhara to Tatopani and follow the Maurice Herzog trail route. Your real trek will begin in Tatopani to reach Narchayng village and Chhotepa. From Chhotepa, you will hike toward Sandhi Kharka, then finally to the north base camp of Annapurna I (8091 m).

After exploring North Annapurna Base Camp, your return journey will start through Sandhi Kharka, Thulo Bugin, then Lete in Mustang. From Lete, you will drive back to Pokhara and finally to Kathmandu to conclude this amazing journey.

Since there isn't currently a lodge or motel along the new hiking path, you could find the trip a little challenging. To look after our clients, we provide highly qualified, experienced trekking guides and Sherpas. In the spring and fall, when you can see a rhododendron forest with red, pink, and white blooms, you will undoubtedly find this walk amazing and fascinating. Additionally, fortunate tourists may spot musk deer, snow panthers, bears, blue sheep, and other natural creatures.

Preparation for Annapurna North Base Camp Trek

Both novice and expert hikers can enjoy the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek. This trek will probably be easier for seasoned hikers who can walk at an elevation of over 3000 meters for 6–7 hours each day. Exercise at home can help you get ready, even if you've never hiked more than 2000 meters.

Getting regular cardio workouts or hiking up hills in your area would be very beneficial on the adventure. Even though the walk is rated as moderate, you should expect to sleep in a tent, eat simple Nepali food, and use the area's natural restrooms because there are no mountain teahouses like Ghorepani Poonhill Trek and Mardi Himal Trek.

Being mentally prepared is just as crucial as being physically healthy because you will be camping in isolated locations with few amenities. Throughout the walk, make sure you are accustomed to basic camping and prepared to adjust to shifting weather conditions and basic living arrangements.

Always keep in mind that being well-prepared can significantly impact your trekking experience, particularly when you're dealing with higher elevations and sleeping in isolated locations.

Annapurna North Base Camp Trek Best Time

Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to trek to North Annapurna Base Camp.

March, April, and May are the months that fall during the spring season. These months are thought to be the ideal times of year to go on the North ABC Trek because of the consistent, bright skies and comfortable temperatures. You will witness a verdant jungle of rhododendrons flowering in a variety of hues throughout this time. During this period, your camping trip will be filled with unspoiled scenery and natural elements.

The autumn season includes the months of September, October, and November. Clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and comparatively little precipitation are all features of these months. Better visibility and a more comfortable trekking experience are provided during this time of year.

You may still enjoy the breathtaking splendor of the Annapurna North Base Camp, though, if you are well-prepared with the right equipment and are an experienced trekker in cold climates.

Accommodation Availability on Annapurna North Base Camp Trek

Kathmandu and Pokhara provide everything you could possibly want, including five-star resorts, cozy hotels, affordable guesthouses, lodges, and homestays. However, Tatopani and Narchyang will be the only locations with cozy accommodations as you begin the walk.

There will be fewer teahouses as you hike up to the base camp because of the rising altitude, and most locations will have none at all. Consequently, when you hike higher, you will be camping. The team from Green Valley Nepal Trek will set up the camp.

Food and Water Availability on Annapurna North Base Camp Trek

Cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara provide a wide variety of cuisine. There is Nepali, Indian, Tibetan, Continental, and Western food in Tatopani and Narchyang. However, when you begin the hike, the only food available is Dal-Bhat, a typical Nepali dish. Dal-Bhat consists of pickles, vegetable curry, lentil soup, and cooked rice.

Everywhere you go, you can find the natural spring water that runs off of taps, rivers, and streams. The residents will offer you boiled and filtered spring water, but you will have to pay for it. Trekkers must carry their water filter hand pumps, UV water purifiers, or chlorine drops to cleanse the Himalayan spring water.

Annapurna North Base Camp Trek Difficulty

Situated in the Annapurna Region, the North Annapurna Base Camp trip is a moderately difficult trip. Many hikers can complete this journey because it doesn't include any high-risk areas or technical terrain. At 4,190 meters above sea level, the base camp trails ascend gradually. This gradual elevation gain enables hikers to effectively acclimate to the altitude.

The necessity for difficult water crossings can be avoided by hanging bridges, such as the one in the Nilgiri River, which make the trek more doable. Additionally, the existence of these bridges adds to the trek's overall moderate difficulty grade.

The walk is moderately difficult, but it's crucial to remember that it's a camping trek. Even though the trip is rather straightforward, there aren't many basic amenities along the way because of the camping feature. While trekking, trekkers should expect to live in more basic conditions and be ready for fewer conveniences.

The consequences of higher elevations, long walking days, and the difficulties of sleeping in isolated locations with little amenities should all be anticipated by hikers.

Travel Insurance for Annapurna North Base Camp Trek

At Green Valley Nepal Treks, we strongly advise all hikers who intend to trek anywhere in Nepal to purchase travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. In the event of any calamity, such as inclement weather, natural disasters, altitude sickness, trekking difficulties, physical injuries, lost or delayed luggage, robbery, etc., travel insurance will be of assistance. It adds an extra degree of security for tourists. Additionally, travel insurance can prevent you from squandering a fortune if you need emergency medical care while hiking in the Himalayas.
