Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak Climbing Overview

Trekking through the world’s highest passes is the dream of adventurers. The heavenly experience of three high passes via Reenjo La Pass hiking (5446m/17520ft), Cho La Pass (5420m/17782ft), Kongma La Pass (5535m/18,159ft) & Island Peak (6,189 m) is unparalleled in mountain vista and snow-faced mountain scenery. These high passes trekking with Island Peak routes offer the best views of mountains above 8000m and many others of lower heights like Ama Dablam, Pumori, Cholatse, Khumbutse, Khalanga, Nuptse, and Lhotse mountains.

The three high passes trek with the Island Peak Climbing route has an itinerary for those who want to experience the challenges and adventure of the mountain trails. The trail leads through Sherpa villages where unique customs and cultures can be closely observed while passing through the monuments, Buddhist monasteries, Prayer wheels, and flags. At Sagarmatha National Park on the trail, which is a habitat of rare flora and fauna, the uniqueness of Himalayan survival can be understood. The spectacular wildlife one can encounter in their wild habitat includes musk deer, blue sheep, Himalaya thar, barking deer, blood Pheasant, Tibetan snow cock, crimson horned Pheasant, yak, et cetera.

Island Peak, located in the middle of Chhukung Valley, is a beautiful mountain rising above the Lhotse Glacier. The peak takes good effort to scale as it is glaciated in the west face, yet is equally rewarding with magnificent views from the top. Outstanding views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, etc., make climbing enthusiastically.

What You Can Expect from the Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak?

  • Cross Three Legendary Passes (All Above 5,300m): In this trip, you will cross three legendary passes: Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m), forming a grand loop through the entire Sagarmatha National Park.
  • Summit a Real Himalayan Peak at 6,189m: On summit day, you will depart base camp at 3:00 AM, cross glaciers, and ascend a fixed-rope headwall that reach Island Peak's summit around 9:00 AM with the entire Everest massif spread before you like a frozen ocean of peaks.
  • Discover the Magical Gokyo Lakes: Far from the crowds, the Gokyo Valley holds six pristine turquoise lakes, and from Gokyo Ri (5,357m) you can see four 8,000m peaks at once.
  • Visit Everest Base Camp: The trail takes you through the Khumbu Glacier all the way to Everest Base Camp. Then climb Kala Patthar (5,545m) for a sunrise view over Everest and the surrounding peaks.
  • Experience a Glacier Crossing on Cho La Pass: Cho La is the most technically challenging of the three passes. The final approach is glaciated, requiring crampons in almost every season, and the traverse takes six to seven hours. It's the kind of raw, thrilling adventure most trekkers only dream about.
  • Immerse Yourself in Authentic Sherpa Culture: Along the way, you trek through picturesque Sherpa villages, dense rhododendron forests, and glacial valleys, staying in traditional teahouses where warm hospitality and local flavors greet you at the end of every big day in the mountains.
  • All-in-One Khumbu Adventure: One journey takes you through the Imja Valley, the Gokyo Lakes system, the Thame Valley, and Everest Base Camp: the entire Khumbu, completely and unforgettably. This is Nepal's greatest adventure, all in a single trip with Green Valley Nepal Treks.

Is the Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak Suitable For You?

  • Prior high-altitude experience of at least one trek above 4,500m is essential. If you have completed treks like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, or similar high-altitude journeys and felt strong throughout, you are exactly who this package is designed for.
  • You will carry a 6–8 kg daypack for up to nine hours daily on pass days, and the combined distance exceeds 180 km over terrain that is rocky, glaciated, steep, and occasionally exposed. Six months of consistent aerobic training, like hiking, running, and cycling, before departure is strongly recommended.
  • Island Peak is not a casual hike to the top. The summit requires crampon walking technique, ice axe self-arrest, fixed rope ascension, basic rope work, and glacier travel awareness.
  • You will spend seven or more nights above 5,000 meters, face unpredictable weather, exhausting pass days, and pre-dawn summit starts. The people who thrive here are those who embrace discomfort, stay patient, and push through when it gets tough.
  • Altitude sickness remains the primary reason trekkers fail to complete this route. Anyone with heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions should consult a doctor before considering this trek.
  • This package is perfect for those who don't just want to see Everest; they want to conquer the entire Khumbu. This itinerary delivers experiences that no other trek on earth quite replicates: glacier crossings, high passes, Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp, and a genuine 6,000m summit.

How to Get Prepared for the Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak?

  • You should comfortably hit before departure, including running 10 km in under 60 minutes, hiking with 1,500m elevation gain, carrying a 15 kg pack for 8 hours, and completing back-to-back training days. Activities like running, cycling, swimming, and stair climbing are all excellent preparation tools.
  • Essential climbing skills include crampon walking technique, ice axe self-arrest, fixed rope ascension using a jumar, basic rope work, and glacier travel awareness. Take a local mountaineering course or practice on a nearby snow peak before the trek begins.
  • Train regularly with your trekking boots, especially on uneven terrain, to avoid blisters and ankle injuries on the trail. Bring duct tape for gear repairs and download offline maps so you are never caught off-guard on the mountain.
  • Acclimatization is your best weapon against altitude sickness. The golden rule is to ascend a maximum of 500 m daily above 3,000 m, hydrate with 4–5 liters of water daily, avoid alcohol completely, and maintain a steady pace throughout.
  • Before departure, get a full medical check-up to confirm you are fit for high-altitude trekking. Consider starting Diamox in Namche after consulting your doctor as a preventive measure against altitude sickness.
  • Travel insurance is non-negotiable. A helicopter evacuation from Island Peak Base Camp costs $6,000–$10,000 without insurance. Your policy must specifically cover helicopter evacuation to 6,500 meters, search and rescue, trip cancellation protection, and medical treatment coverage.
  • Your clothing system should include merino wool base layers, a 700+ fill down jacket, Gore-Tex shell jacket and pants, and six pairs of wool-blend socks. For the summit, technical gear includes crampons, an ice axe, a climbing harness, a helmet, carabiners, and an ascender for fixed ropes. If you don't own climbing equipment, rental in Kathmandu or Namche is widely available.
  • You need three separate permits processed in Kathmandu before flying to Lukla: the Sagarmatha National Park Permit ($30), the TIMS Card ($20), and the Island Peak Climbing Permit ($125–$250 depending on season), issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association.
  • Carry cash beyond Namche as ATMs are unreliable at higher altitudes. Budget an additional 20% buffer on top of your quoted package price to comfortably cover hot showers, snacks, drinks, charging fees, and tips for your guide and porters.
  • Timing your trek correctly makes a huge difference. Spring (mid-March to late May) offers warm days and stable summit conditions, while autumn (late September to mid-November) delivers exceptionally clear post-monsoon skies and quieter trails.

After breakfast in Lobuche, we begin the trek by crossing the Khumbu Glacier (2 hours) and then climb the canyon to ascend to Kongma La (5,535m). We continue a short yet pleasant walk along the riverside, which leads to a Big-rock. To the south of this rock, the Amphu Lapcha route lies. The crisscross route through the Imja and Lhotse glaciers leads to a wide valley. It flanks the southwest side of the Island peak. We stay overnight at Island peak base camp. We set up a tent at base camp, and you will be served meals there.

  • Tent
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • 4 to 5 hours

We have to climb the rock culvert early in the morning. Although it is not difficult, there are many short rock steps to be crossed before you come across the right side of the culvert. Then the trail leads to the ridgeline and it ultimately leads to traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier. You will need to rope up for the glacier as it contains several crevasses but it leads without difficulty, to a 100m(330ft) snow and ice slope (40-45°) on which the guides will fix a rope. From the top of this slope, 3 rope lengths along a sharp summit ridge lead to the top. After enjoying the summit views you will descend all the way to Chhukung. We stay overnight at a guest house in Chhukung. You will be provided three meals a day there.

Useful Info

Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak: Best Time

  • Spring, from mid-March through late May, is considered the ideal time for this adventure. The weather is usually stable with clear skies and comfortable daytime temperatures. Trails are lively during this period, especially near Everest Base Camp, as many climbing expeditions prepare for summit attempts. Although the Island Peak climbing permit is more expensive in spring, the summit conditions are typically safest and most reliable during April and early May.
  • Autumn, which runs from late September to mid-November, is another excellent season for the trek. Many seasoned trekkers favor this period because the air becomes crystal clear after the monsoon, offering outstanding mountain views and a more peaceful trail experience. In addition, Island Peak permits are available at a lower cost compared to the spring. However, temperatures begin to fall sharply in November, and higher passes can experience early snowstorms.
  • The monsoon months (June to August) and the harsh winter season (December to February) are generally not recommended for this route. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon makes trails slippery, risky, and often hides the Himalayan scenery behind clouds. In winter, freezing temperatures and icy conditions can block the high passes and create challenging trekking conditions.

Accommodation on the Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak

Throughout the trek, you will stay in teahouses or lodges, providing basic amenities and a chance to experience the local Sherpa culture. These are the backbone of the trekking experience in the Khumbu region: simple, warm, and wonderfully authentic.

Below 4,000 m, private rooms are available with some attached bathrooms, hot showers included, charging facilities, and Wi-Fi commonly available. Towns like Namche Bazaar and Phakding offer surprisingly comfortable lodges where you can recharge both yourself and your devices before heading higher.

As you climb higher, facilities become more basic. Above 4,000 m, shared twin rooms are standard with common bathrooms only, hot showers at extra cost of around $5, limited charging at $3–5 per device, and little to no Wi-Fi availability. Embrace this as part of the raw, immersive mountain experience.

The experience shifts entirely once you reach the climbing section. During the climbing portion, you will stay in tents at designated base camps. Sleeping under a sky full of stars at 5,200m with the Himalayan giants surrounding you is an experience that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth.

Food or Meal on the Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak

Don't let the remote altitude fool you, the teahouse menus along this route are remarkably diverse. Typical teahouse menu options include dal bhat with unlimited refills, pasta dishes in various styles, surprisingly common pizza, egg preparations as a reliable protein source, and Tibetan bread as a local favorite.

Dal Bhat deserves a special mention. This traditional Nepali meal of steamed rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles is the most popular choice among serious trekkers, and for good reason. It is nutritious, filling, energy-rich, and comes with unlimited refills in most teahouses. Many veteran trekkers swear by it as the best fuel for long, demanding days on the mountain.

The package includes three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trek, along with fresh fruit every evening after dinner. This means you can focus entirely on the adventure without worrying about your next meal.

Eating right on summit day is critical. Summit day nutrition includes a high-energy breakfast at 2:00 AM, energy bars and gels on the move, hot drinks carried in a thermos, lunch after the descent, and a celebration dinner to mark your achievement. Your guide will ensure you are properly fueled for the biggest day of the trek.

Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak Difficulty

This itinerary is classified as a strenuous and Technical adventure. It is designed for experienced trekkers and climbers rather than beginners. Anyone without previous high-altitude trekking experience or proper physical preparation should carefully reconsider attempting this route.

During the journey, trekkers spend more than a week above 5,000 meters, where altitude and weather can become extremely challenging. Participants are expected to carry a daypack weighing around 6 to 8 kg for long trekking days that may last up to nine hours, especially while crossing high passes.

The climb to Island Peak also involves ascending a steep 70-degree ice headwall at nearly 6,000 meters, often in freezing temperatures before sunrise. Overall, the route covers more than 180 kilometers across rugged terrain that includes rocky trails, glaciers, steep ascents, and exposed sections.

Even with these challenges, many non-professional climbers complete this route every year. Proper preparation is the deciding factor. Trekkers should ideally have prior experience above 4,500 meters, follow a structured fitness program for several months before departure, allow enough time for acclimatization, and travel with a skilled and experienced guide.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is one of the most common reasons people are unable to finish the trek. It is important to recognize warning signs such as ongoing headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, reduced appetite, or confusion. If symptoms become more severe at higher elevations, immediate descent is essential. Reaching the summit is never more important than protecting your health and safety.

At Green Valley Nepal Treks, your safety is our highest priority. We strongly advise every trekker to secure comprehensive travel insurance well before their departure date. At extreme altitudes, in remote terrain, far from any hospital, the right insurance policy is quite literally the difference between a safe rescue and a financial disaster.

The mountains do not care about your plans. Altitude sickness, sudden weather changes, injuries, and flight cancellations are all very real possibilities on this route. A helicopter evacuation from Island Peak Base Camp costs $6,000–$10,000 without insurance. That single fact alone makes comprehensive travel insurance the most important thing you pack before leaving home.

At altitudes above 5,000m, walking down is not always a safe or viable option when a medical emergency strikes. Your insurance policy must specifically cover helicopter evacuation to a minimum altitude of 6,500 meters, search and rescue inclusion, trip cancellation protection, and full medical treatment coverage.

When comparing travel insurance policies for this trek, ensure every single one of these is included:

  • Helicopter evacuation up to a minimum of 6,500m altitude
  • Emergency medical treatment, including hospitalization in Kathmandu
  • Search and rescue operations in remote mountain terrain
  • Trip cancellation and curtailment due to illness, injury, or weather
  • Flight delays and cancellations are especially critical for the notoriously weather-dependent Lukla flights
  • Lost or damaged equipment: mountaineering gear is expensive to replace
  • 24/7 emergency assistance with a helpline you can call from the mountain
  • Adventure sports or mountaineering coverage specifically for Island Peak climbing
  • Personal liability coverage in case of accidental injury to others
  • Repatriation coverage to cover the cost of returning home in a medical emergency

FAQs
  • Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak is a Grade 5 Strenuous/Technical adventure. It involves seven or more nights above 5,000 meters, covering over 180 kilometers of rocky, glaciated, and steep terrain, and climbing a 70-degree ice headwall at 6,000 meters in sub-zero darkness. Prior high-altitude trekking experience is essential.

  • Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak takes 20–23 days in total, including acclimatization days, three high pass crossings, Everest Base Camp visit, and the Island Peak summit attempt. Adding 1–2 buffer days for weather delays is always recommended.

  • The best seasons are Spring (mid-March to late May) for warm days and stable summit conditions, and Autumn (late September to mid-November) for clear skies and quieter trails. Monsoon (June–August) and deep winter (December–February) should be avoided.

  • Yes. Island Peak requires crampon walking, ice axe self-arrest, fixed rope ascension using a jumar, basic rope work, and glacier travel awareness. You don't need to be a professional climber, but prior high-altitude trekking experience above 4,500m is strongly recommended.

  • Three permits are required: the Sagarmatha National Park Permit ($30), the TIMS Card ($20), and the Island Peak Climbing Permit ($250 in spring, $125 in autumn) issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. All permits are processed in Kathmandu before flying to Lukla.

  • The total estimated cost ranges from $2,720–$4,280 per person for a mid-range guided trip. Group packages for four or more trekkers can bring costs down to $2,200–$2,800. Always budget an additional 20% for personal expenses along the trail.

  • Below 4,000m, private rooms with hot showers, charging facilities, and Wi-Fi are available. Above 4,000m, shared twin rooms with basic facilities become standard. During the Island Peak climbing section, you stay in tents at designated base camps.

  • To prevent altitude sickness, ascend a maximum of 500m daily above 3,000m, drink 4–5 liters of water daily, avoid alcohol completely, consider Diamox after consulting your doctor, and always maintain a steady pace. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen at any altitude.

  • Yes. Crampons, ice axe, climbing harness, helmet, and ascender can be rented in Kathmandu or Namche Bazaar for $80–$150 for the full trip. Kathmandu's Thamel district has a wide range of reliable gear rental shops available to trekkers.

  • Yes, travel insurance is absolutely non-negotiable. A helicopter evacuation from Island Peak Base Camp alone costs $6,000–$10,000 without insurance. Your policy must cover helicopter evacuation to at least 6,500m, search and rescue, medical treatment, and trip cancellation. Budget $150–$300 for a comprehensive policy.
