- Bhaktapur (Bhadgaon) Durbar Square:
One of the most remarkable remnants from the Malla era, Bhaktapur stands as a traditional and cultural Newar town that preserves the art, architecture, and lifestyle of the residents. A truly mesmerizing atmosphere surrounds the town, with brick-paved streets, artistic wooden doors and windows in traditional houses of the inhabitants, and an array of well-preserved architecture. Bhaktapur lies towards the east of Kathmandu Valley. The Durbar Square at Bhaktapur is highly regarded among other attractions that surround the place. The city is also renowned for its special cap, called Bhadgaule topi and Juju Dhau (Yogurt).
Bhaktapur Durbar Square’s major attraction is the 55-window Palace which was created by King Bhupatindra Malla. This palace was the home to royal families till 1769 and has now been transformed into the National Gallery. The Golden Gate leads into Mulchok Court, home to the Taleju Temple which is dedicated to the worship of Taleju Bhawani. The entrance, however, is restricted to Hindus alone, and photographing Kumari, the living goddess, is strictly prohibited.
- Changu Narayan Temple:
The Chagu Narayan Temple lies among the oldest Vishnu temples of Vishnu and was built in the early 5th century AD. The temple is situated along a ridge to the northeast of the valley, 20 km from Katmandu. The historical importance of Changu Narayan is established through the stone sculptures, the finest remnants of art from the 7th and 9th centuries AD. The temple’s location also provides a magnificent view of the Himalayan ranges and the Kathmandu Valley.
- Nagarkot:
Towards the northeast of Kathmandu lies one of the best viewpoints around the Kathmandu Valley, Nagarkot. The hill is just under an hour’s drive from Kathmandu and is located at a height of 2175m above sea level. Views from Nagarkot of the northern snow mountains are mesmeric, which form a panorama above the rolling hills. Nagarkot is also an ideal location to enjoy sunrise and sunset views.
You can add Kathmandu Day Tour after completing the Everest Base Camp Trek, on the day you will be back to Kathmandu from Lukla.
