As you move along, yaks and deer will be grazing above and below your path.

Tilicho Lake, a large lake with a stunning setting, is located on the other side, hidden behind the north face of Tilicho Peak. An elite French expedition team referred to Tilicho Lake as "The Great Ice Lake." The three majestic peaks that surround Tilicho Lake are the Tilicho Himal, Annapurna Range, and Nilgiri Himal. The Lake also holds a unique place in Hinduism since it is mentioned in The Ramayan, one of the religion's holiest books. The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake and Ghorepani Trek is a challenging trek that takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. However, the trek is best done during certain times of the year. Here are the best times to undertake the trek:

    • Spring (March-May): Spring is considered the best time to undertake the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho and Poonhill. The weather is mild, and the rhododendron flowers are in bloom, which makes the trek even more beautiful.
    • Autumn (September-November): Autumn is also a good time to undertake the trek. The weather is clear, and the views of the mountains are spectacular. The days are warm, and the nights are cool, making it perfect trekking weather.
    • Summer (June-August): Summer is also a good time to undertake the trek, but it's also the monsoon season, which means that it can be wet and muddy. The trail may be slippery, and the views can be obscured by clouds.
    • Winter (December-February): Winter is not the best time to undertake the trek. The trail can be covered in snow, and the weather can be extremely cold. The days are short, and the nights are long, making it difficult to complete the trek.

It is important to note that the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so it is always best to be prepared for all types of weather. It is also important to note that the trail may be closed during the monsoon season (July-August) due to landslides and other hazards. So, the best time to undertake the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho and Poonhill is during the spring and autumn seasons.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho and Poonhill Difficulty

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake and Poonhill is considered to be a challenging trek that requires a good level of fitness and preparation. Here are some of the factors that contribute to the difficulty of the trek:

    • Altitude: The trek takes you to high altitudes, with the highest point being the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters above sea level. The altitude can cause altitude sickness, which can be debilitating and even dangerous if not properly acclimatized to.
    • Terrain: The trek involves hiking through steep terrain and rugged terrain, which can be challenging for some. The trail can be rocky, uneven, and covered in snow or ice.
    • Weather: The weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable and can change quickly. It's important to be prepared for all types of weather, including rain, snow, and high winds.
    • Duration: The trek takes around 20 days to complete, depending on your itinerary. This can be physically demanding, especially at high altitudes.
    • Navigation: The trail can be challenging to navigate, and it's important to have a good sense of direction. If you are new to trekking or not confident in your ability to navigate the trail, it is recommended that you hire a guide and porter to help you.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho and Poonhill Travel Insurance

You must get travel insurance to participate in the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho and Ghorepani Poonhill and be fully insured. It is highly advised that you purchase travel insurance that includes coverage for things like helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, accidents, lost luggage, theft, liability, and medical costs. Ensure the insurance covers all the activities, including climbing and hiking you want to do while visiting Nepal. You can only request a rescue helicopter from a remote location if you have solid evidence that you can pay for it and are injured and unable to move. In Kathmandu, Green Valley Nepal Treks has a contract that ensures reimbursement for helicopter evacuations. Once you are saved, they take a monetary deposit from you and give it to the operator of the rescue helicopter. If your policy doesn't expressly cover altitudes beyond 6000 meters, it may be challenging to resolve a claim.

Altitude Sickness and Remedies during Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho and Poonhill

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a common problem for trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho and Poonhill Trek. It occurs when the body is unable to acclimate to the decrease in oxygen at high altitudes. Symptoms can include headache, fatigue, nausea, difficulty sleeping, and shortness of breath.

The best way to prevent altitude sickness is to acclimatize properly. This means ascending to higher altitudes gradually and allowing the body time to adjust. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol and cigarettes and to stay well-hydrated. If you do begin to experience symptoms of altitude sickness, the most important thing is to stop ascending and allow your body to acclimatize. Descend to a lower altitude if necessary.

Some common remedies for altitude sickness include:

    • Taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen for headache relief.
    • Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated.
    • Resting as much as possible.
    • Taking Diamox (Acetazolamide) as prophylaxis can help to prevent or reduce symptoms of altitude sickness.

It is important to note that if symptoms persist or worsen, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. In severe cases, altitude sickness can lead to potentially life-threatening conditions such as high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) or high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE).
