The Annapurna region in north-central Nepal is one of the world's most diverse and spectacular trekking destinations, encompassing the majestic Annapurna massif with several peaks over 7,000m, including Annapurna I (8,091m), the tenth-highest mountain on Earth. This region offers an incredible variety of landscapes, cultures, and trekking experiences suited to all abilities.
The famous Annapurna Circuit Trek circles the entire massif, crossing the dramatic Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and showcasing everything from subtropical forests and rice terraces to high-altitude deserts and glacial valleys. The shorter Annapurna Base Camp Trek leads directly to the heart of the sanctuary, surrounded by towering peaks in a natural amphitheater. Other popular routes include the Poon Hill Trek, perfect for those with limited time, and the challenging Annapurna Sanctuary Trek.
Established in 1986, the Annapurna Conservation Area is Nepal's largest protected area, home to diverse wildlife including snow leopards, Himalayan tahr, and over 470 bird species. The region showcases rich cultural diversity, with Gurung, Magar, and Thakali villages, as well as the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath.
Well-developed infrastructure, teahouse networks, and accessibility from Pokhara make the Annapurna region ideal for trekkers. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best conditions for trekking.
